Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Lynden+Gooch+Manchester+City+v+Sunderland+bwZeJFMKN3xl

The start of the English Premier League season was headlined by a surprising start for a young midfielder, while several U.S. Men’s National Team veterans did not feature in the season-opening festivities.

Lynden Gooch might have been a surprise start for some Sunderland fans, but the Santa Cruz-born midfielder certainly held his own against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a 2-1 defeat. The pacy Sunderland academy graduate did well to press and put in tackles against the Citizens, and even put in a few dangerous balls into Willy Caballero’s box. His appearance served as the highlight for Americans in the Premier League, though, as the young midfielder was the only U.S. player to feature in the English top flight over the weekend.

Danny Williams played the full 90 in a Championship match on Saturday in which his Reading FC lost to Wolves. Jonathan Spector also played a whole Championship match for Birmingham City as his side defeated Leeds. 2-1. In League One, Gboly Ariyibi played dangerously on the wing for Chesterfield in their win against Swindon, pitching in with an impressive assist.

In continental Europe, U.S. under-20 player Mukwelle Akale made his full debut for Villarreal in a preseason match against Leganés after coming off the bench in the 61st minute. The youth player utilized his pace to create and nearly convert a clear chance near the match’s end.

  1. Bornstein is a solid, all around player. The guy has established himself in Liga MX on multiple teams. He also had a strong World Cup when given the chance. His accomplishments should not be overlooked.

    • You’ve got an interesting opinion of “Established on multiple Liga MX teams”. Prior to the last 2 years Bornstein was a rarely used bench player for the clubs he was signed to in Mexico and at least a 3rd of that time was playing as a CDM not a LB. CDM where we’ve had a number of options who are equal or better than him… (Jones, Bradley, Beckerman, Williams, Kitchen).
As for his performances in the 2010 WC you are re-writing history a bit. Bornstein didn’t play in either of the first 2 matches of the group phase. He was used in our 3rd & 4th matches due to injuries for a total of 200 minutes (roughly 1/2 the total minutes available). While his play was acceptable, it wasn’t like he was a standout during those games.

      • I’m realistic about him, but I thought it was very telling of where he now stands on the team with all the new talent they brought in. He got good minutes end of last season and the fact that he didn’t even make the bench should be a good indication that minutes could be tough to come by.

    • and our national team goalkeeper did not dress. he needs to win that spot, asap, over Victor Valdez or Tim Howard, playing well for Colorado, or someone else is starting in the Hex this fall!

  2. There’s an American born Mexican defender on Toluca’s roster, Marco Jaime. Transfermkt indicates the 21 y.o. has a US passport. Hasn’t played in the regular season yet but has played in the Copa MX for them.

  3. This list is missing a lot of players including (and not limited to) Caleb Stanko, Russell Canouse, Joel Sonora, Theoson Siebatcheu, Bjørn Johnsen, and AJ Soares.

  4. good to see some of our younger players getting starting minutes and minutes off of the bench in the opening weekend of the european season. Hopefully that is a sign of good things to come this year and going forward with Russia only 2yrs away!

  5. While it wasn’t exactly a great weekend for the Yanks abroad we have to remember that it was the first week of the EPL and that many of the other European leagues have yet to start their season. A good portion of our players are in Germany so next week will drastically improve the outlook.
Look for Yedlin, Miazga, & Zelalem to be loaned out within the next 2 weeks to clubs that need to either strengthen their XI or add needed depth.
Hyndman has been injured for most of the preseason, so it isn’t surprising that he wasn’t in the 18 this past weekend. He’ll be in the mix shortly.
    Positives from this past week….
Green & CCV both made the benchs of their teams. Gooch started & was dangerous for Sunderland. Akale made his 1st team debut for Villarreal. Kitchen got 45 minutes proving that he is returning from injury.

As leagues get rolling expect more of the US players to get minutes and improve the outlook of Yanks Abroad.

  6. Lynden Gooch was definelty a bright spot and quite a surprise. By all accounts he gave City fits. Other than that, not a great weekend for yanks abroad. Guzan and Hyndman not even dressing does not bode well unless there’s something else going on with Guzan, don’t know if I even expected Hyndman to make the bench. Also, Pulisic? What happened there?
