FC Dallas left it for late, but an unlikely goalscorer pushed the MLS contender to a win in their CONCACAF Champions League opener.

Maynor Figueroa provided an 86th minute winner, pushing FC Dallas to a 2-1 victory over Nicaraguan side Real Esteli on Thursday at Toyota Stadium. The win sees FC Dallas claim first place in Group H, which also includes Honduran side Suchitepéquez.

As Esteli attempted to kill off the game for a valuable road point, FC Dallas generated a late chance through Figueroa and Maxi Urruti. The latter fed the former with a lay-off inside the box, allowing the FC Dallas defender to curl the game-winning shot into the back of the net.

Just moments before halftime, the match was deadlocked at 0-0. However, a 44th minute goal from Michael Barrios sent FCD into the locker room with a one-goal advantage.

Three minutes into the second stanza, that advantage was erased as Juan Berdún pulled Esteli back with a goal of his own to make the score 1-1.

It remained tied until the game’s waning moments, when Figueroa fired FC Dallas to an ideal CCL-opening result.

Following the win, FC Dallas returns to action on Wednesday for a U.S. Open Cup clash with the LA Galaxy, while the team’s CCL fight continues on August 24 at Real Esteli.
