Americans Abroad: Sunday Rewind

villafana

After a chaotic Saturday schedule, Sunday didn’t prove to be the best day for the remaining contingent of Americans Abroad.

Of the seven Americans in action on Sunday, just two earned minutes in victories. Both Jorge Villafana and Cole Grossman played a full 90 minutes in league play, taking down Pumas and Odds BK, respectively.

The only other American to see the field was Geoff Cameron, who saw one of four Crystal Palace goals deflect off of him and into the back of the net in a 4-1 defeat. With the loss, Stoke City has now dropped four of the team’s first five matches while surrendering a league-high 14 goals so far this season.

John Brooks’ Hertha Berlin is on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Bundesliga club has collected nine points from three games this season, although the U.S. Men’s National Team defender missed this weekend’s win over Schalke due to injury.

Here’s a closer look at Sunday’s Americans Abroad:

Lynden Gooch dressed but did not play while Cameron Carter-Vickers did not dress for Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Geoff Cameron started and played 90 minutes in Stoke City’s 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace.

John Brooks did not dress in Hertha Berlin’s 2-0 win over Schalke.

Jorge Villafana started and played 90 minutes in Santos Laguna’s 3-1 win over Pumas.

Fafa Picault did not dress for St. Pauli’s 1-1 draw with Karlsruhler.

Cole Grossman started and played 90 minutes in Stabaek’s 1-0 win over Odds BK.

  1. Appears some of these guys that didn’t play over the weekend are being held for League Cup games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Bournemouth, Sunderland, Arsenal, and Spurs all are playing midweek against lower division squads.
