The international break is over, as club soccer returns on Saturday with some spectacular matchups.

Saturday’s action is headlined by a derby clash between Manchester United and Manchester City. Featuring longtime rivals Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho at the helm, the two Manchester clubs have been the best in England thus far, even if City will be without Sergio Aguero for Saturday’s clash due to suspension.

Elsewhere in England, Arsenal takes on Southampton, while reigning champions Leicester City visit Liverpool.

In Spain, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are in action against Osasuna and Deportivo Alaves, respectively, while German soccer sees Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund face Terrence Boyd and RB Leipizig.

If you will be watching today’s soccer, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

    • That’s the play he can pass Donovan with. Pulisic or Johnson down the left hand side with the choice of Wood making the run on goal or Jozy cutting into the space left behind and finishing it from the top of the box. That combo could be working for six more years IF (big if) those guys can stay healthy (firmly knocking on my oak desk).

  1. The fact that RB Leipzig is hated in Germany might make me keen to support them, apart from supporting whatever clubs the Yanks are playing for of course. Is Boyd even still training with them?

Glad they beat BVB today since they kept American Messi on the bench…again

    • I can understand where the animosity comes from towards RedBull, but I don’t have any attachment to that ire either.
I was also a little bit smirkily like, “Shoulda’ played Pulisic.”
It was pretty clear that Goetze wasn’t at full speed and was stunting the attack to a degree. They needed a spark all game, and the kid seems to bring that.

    • Fabian didn’t play, Wood came off early, CP didn’t play. One common denominator among them is that they all played in both CONCACAF qualifiers. I think their managers are just limiting their minutes. Especially in the case of FJ and CP, both teams have CL games midweek and they may be saving them for those mid-week games. And CP, of course, has a lot of good to great players in front of him.

      • It isn’t really uncommon for US players to be lightly used after playing in CONCACAF Qualifiers. Between the extended travel involved, injuries from poor fields & hacking defenses, as well as other factors we tend to see our players get limited minutes after FIFA Dates.

    • Played some in preseason, hasn’t made the field yet in real games. Check out his twitter @TBoyd91, for some video of him in actual training and some trick shot stuff. Also, an interview with him for RBL’s English website.

      • pretty sure dloa comments anytime there’s a hint that players can play multiple positions (something no one has argued against), as an indirect defense of klinsmann’s management.

honestly though, i’m just commenting because i love that he’s the only person to have “liked” your comments arguing with him. 🙂

      • Yeah, I get that part. DLOA is the biggest attention seeker here since my alter-namesake and I’m familiar with his many shticks.

I was mostly wondering where the comparison to another player crept in and to which player he was referring specifically. My only thought was maybe Fabian Johnson, but that wouldn’t make much sense considering most fans want him in midfield and not in defense anyway.

But Mr. Snide here would rather be cryptic so he can go on thinking he’s clever, I suppose. His “intended audience”, whomever that is, should at least come like his comments once in a while.

      • Recap: a friendly commenter that generally agrees with me noted that a US fullback scored.

So I chided in with a harmless joke pointing out the fact that when another US fullback started scoring (FJ) people claimed JK was dumb for not starting him at LW…..

        Then You seemed confused

Then I responded merely saying it was a comment intended for those who would understand it. This is a public blog, I never made a direct slight at someone. your perception of my comment is solely yours, just because you FEEL I was being snide or whatever doesn’t not mean I was. I just threw out a harmless joke mocking people who trash a coach for doing normal things (starting a fullback at fullback; using a fullback that can play wing as a winger when needed and allowed).

Try to be less sensitive. Just because u don’t understand a comment doesn’t mean that person intended to belittle you…..

        Again, as always,
        Have a great day!!!

      • Well, since this is current, you might as well also mention that Cameron played RB instead of CB today for Stoke. He often went forward and one of the commentators seemed to speak favorably of that. Some people after the T&T game insisted that Cameron should/could only play CB.

  2. I had no idea red bull was hated the way they are in germany. I wonder if anyone will take a knee for the anthem to demonstrate the easts financial oppression of the west lol.

    • They essentially bought a team!

Dropped all local sporting history and culture … Others have become envious of their table climbing with promotion after promotion after promotion. They have tons of resources and are seen as not really bring in it for sporting and cultural reasons but just for profit and branding.

Much like RBny was seen in the first years.

      • The NY Times published an in-depth look at the club in late August in an effort to explain why it’s so hated. One points is that Red Bull has seemingly broken the spirit of a rule that prohibits teams from including sponsors in their names. The company argues that RB stands for “RasenBallsport” (something like “Lawn ball sports”) rather than the energy drink. The bigger issue, though, is how the club has violated the spirit of a rule requiring all Bundesliga teams to be majority-owned by their fans. High membership prices–and the club’s general loathsomeness–mean RB Leipzig’s fan owners are few and almost exclusively Red Bull employees.

  3. Pulisic on the bench to begin today, not really a surprise. No Kagawa today, maybe an injury. Dembele, Ramos, and CP are the offensive subs available today.

    • It is fairly common for US players to miss the 1st league match after CONCACAF Qualification matches. With some it’s due to the amount of travel which can dehydrate the players and/or cause cramping. While some coaches often bench players who don’t participate in training during the break or that they feel need to be rested.
