Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Several of Europe’s biggest teams take the field on Wednesday with a clash of Spain’s elite headlining a busy schedule.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid collide on Wednesday afternoon in a clash of two of La Liga’s title contenders. Entering the match, Atleti sits one point behind Barca, who currently occupy third place. Sitting in first, meanwhile, is Real Madrid, who can pad their lead with a win over Villarreal on Wednesday afternoon.

In England, the Leage Cup returns for another day of action. Manchester United headlines proceedings as Jose Mourinho’s side looks to break out of their recent funk against Northampton Town. Meanwhile, Manchester City faces fellow Premier League side Swansea City, while Cameron Carter-Vickers’ Tottenham faces Gillingham.

German soccer features a clash of the Bundesliga’s top two teams when Bayern Munich takes on a rising Hertha Berlin team.Fabian Johnson’s Borussia Monchengladbach is also in action against Terrence Boyd’s RB Leipzig, while Werder Bremen will be without Aron Johannsson for a clash with Mainz.

  1. Green is not even on the bench for Bayern. They have another game on Saturday vs. Hamburg. If he’s going to get playing time I’d think it would be in that game. If he’s still stuck to the bench at that point, I’d think he’s unlikely to break in anytime soon unless there is a Lewandowski injury.

    Great to see CCV getting time today! It feels like there is a Yanks Abroad revival this year!

    • Lewandowski has lead his teams or been second in minutes played each of his last five seasons. Last year he lead all other Bayern field players in minutes by 181 minutes, two entire games worth. Robben, Kimmich, Sanches, and Coman the offensive bench players today hard to justify putting Green or any American above that group.

  2. also, looks like cameron’s starting in midfield. considering he’s been (by all reports) hapless in his last few games at the back, i’m just glad he’s on the field at all.
