College Soccer Weekend Rewind: UVA tops UNC, Louisville beats Syracuse, and more

The Louisville Cardinals are on a roll, and even Syracuse couldn’t slow them down.

The SBI No. 9 Cardinals handed Syracuse a 1-0 loss last Friday in one of the marquee matches of the weekend. Junior forward Mohamed Thiaw scored the winning goal to push Louisville’s unbeaten run to eight in a row, while Cardinals goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland recorded his eighth shutout of the season.

The loss kept Syracuse’s slump going. The Orangemen are now winless in four matches, with the last two losses coming without star defender Miles Robinson, who is with the U.S. Under-20 national team.

SBI No. 13 Virginia earned the win of the weekend, topping No. 2 North Carolina, 2-1, on Friday. Pablo Aguilar and Wesley Wade helped rally the Cavaliers after North Carolina took a first-half lead. The Virginia victory snapped UNC’s five-match unbeaten run.

It was a rough few days for SBI No. 10 Butler, which suffered losses to No. 9 Creighton (1-0 on Friday) and No. 6 Denver (1-0 on Monday).

Here is rundown of the weekend’s college soccer action, as well as Monday’s top matches:
