Following news that Wade Barrett wouldn’t be retained as permanent head coach, the Houston Dynamo have wasted little time in naming a replacement.

The Dynamo have officially named Wilmer Cabrera as head coach. The news was first reported by FourFourTwo on Thursday.

Cabrera, best known for his time at Chivas USA, most recently took charge of the Dynamo’s USL affiliate, Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.

News broke on Wednesday that the Dynamo wouldn’t be offering Barrett the permanent head coaching job. However, Dynamo president Chris Canetti, who cited a need for more MLS experience, said that the club was hoping to keep Barrett in some capacity.

The MLS experience comes in the form of Cabrera, who managed Chivas USA through the club’s final season in 2014. Prior to taking charge of Chivas, the Colombian took charge of the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team for five years before becoming an assistant with the Colorado Rapids.

Under Barrett, the Dynamo went 4-7-11, finishing last in the Western Conference following a 3-7-3 start under previous manager Owen Coyle.

What do you think of the hire? How will Cabrera fare?
