The Best of MLS Week 31: Bush, D.C. United, and more

MLS: Montreal Impact at New England Revolution

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

A goalkeeper took home the SBI Player of the Week after a stunning performance to boost his team’s playoff hopes. Montreal Impact shot-stopper Evan Bush faced 22 shots against Orlando City on Sunday, but still walked out of Camping World Stadium with a clean sheet. Bush’s reactions were especially brilliant that afternoon, denying Cyle Larin on two occasions.

Bush’s wonderful display was enough to award him the top individual honor over Osvaldo Alonso and Lamar Neagle.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

D.C. United won its third straight game and extended its unbeaten streak to five matches by defeating Toronto FC, 2-1, at BMO Field on Saturday. The convincing performance was enough to secure the SBI Team of the Week award. Lamar Neagle led D.C.’s comeback on the road with his brace and has virtually wrapped up a postseason berth as a result.

United earned this week’s honor over two other road victors in the Montreal Impact and Seattle Sounders.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

In a week when few rookies failed to impress, Philadelphia Union forward Fabian Herbers delivered. The German won the SBI Rookie of the Week honors after scoring in the Union’s 3-2 defeat to the New York Red Bulls in his 11th start of the season. Herbers has now recorded three goals and seven assists in his debut campaign in MLS.

Herbers beat out Alex Muyl and Alphonso Davies to the award this week.

GOAL OF THE WEEK

Harrison Afful’s bullet from distance against the Chicago Fire was the clear-cut winner for the SBI Goal of the Week award.
