Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Following a chaotic international break, club soccer returns on Saturday with several huge rivalry clashes.

Starting in Spain, last year’s Champions League finalists collide for the Madrid derby as league-leaders Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid. Atleti enters the day six points behind their local rival, making Saturday’s clash a vital one in the La Liga title race.

England sees two of the game’s top managers collide, while continuing their own personal rivalry. Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal remains a title contender, but the Gunners face a stiff test against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

Finally, action turns towards Germany, where Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich collide in a clash of perennial contenders.

  1. Another young American looked good for schalke u19 today, haji Wright scored a brace. That gives him 6 goals in 10 games

    • Gaines and him could make for an interesting group of kids at Schalke. If memory serves me right they have two other Americans playing there as well.

      • Weston McKennie is at Schalke with Haji Wright. McKinze Gaines is at Wolfsburg. Gaines has made an appearance for the U23s in the Premier League International Cup and several appearances in club friendlies with the full team.

  2. Do not know for sure, but the networks are loaded with College football commitments. On Sunday’s there is a lot more open space for programing for the networks. Which is why you see championship game on a Saturday, no college football.

This year college football has had in some of its games stronger year over year ratings than NFL.

  3. My comment probably belongs on an MLS piece but find it very strange that MLS wouldn’t play any of its post season games on Saturday as opposed to Sunday where it is in competition with the NFL viewers. Can anyone that’s more clued in to that dynamic shed some light on why that is?!
