Americans Abroad Sunday Rewind: Chandler, Perez and more

One U.S. Men’s National Team defender made a successful return to his club team following the international break, while a U.S. youth product joined his club’s first team for the first time in Sunday’s Serie A action.

Timmy Chandler returned to the Eintracht Frankfurt lineup on Sunday and helped lead the club to a 2-1 win over Aron Johannsson’s Werder Bremen. Johannsson did not dress for Sunday’s match, one which saw Chandler go a full 90 minutes in another solid performance for his club.

Josh Perez didn’t get into the action on Sunday, but the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team forward did make the bench for the first time with Serie A side Fiorentina. Perez, who signed with the club earlier this year following his 18th birthday, scored four goals and added four assists for the club’s reserve side before earning the first team call-up.

Here’s a closer look at Sunday’s Americans Abroad:

Brad Guzan dressed but did not play in Middlesbrough’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea.

Bobby Wood did not dress in Hamburg’s 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim. (Wood was suspended due to a red card)

Timmy Chandler started and played 90 minutes in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2-1 win over Werder Bremen. Aron Johannsson did not dress.

Josh Perez dressed but did not play in Fiorentina’s 4-0 win over Empoli.

Jorge Villafana dressed but did not play in Santos Laguna’s 2-1 win over Toluca.

DeAndre Yedlin dressed but did not play in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Rubio Rubin dressed but did not play in FC Utrecht’s 1-1 draw with Twente.

Jerome Kiesewetter dressed but did not play in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 1-0 win over St. Pauli. Fafa Picault did not dress.

  1. I agree. There were moments in that game in which Timmy looked like one of the best 5 players on the pitch, especially when he got up field. I think for him to be a success he needs that comfort level u said, but also athletic CB’s that can cover for him plus a quality DM. Neither of which the USMNT have right now. I know CCV is not yet ready but I wonder what Chandler would be like in a CCV/Miazga back line that is more athletic. I think the same could be said for Yedlin.

  2. Fiorentina has two games each week until January, so perhaps Josh can get some playing time during that stretch. When Josh signed last year and CP had been moved up to the first team there were several that said Josh was better than Christian, that seems unlikely at this point, but if he can start getting some experience in Serie A all the better for the US.

  3. Chandler: my guess is he must be one of these guys who needs to feel confident and comfortable. Klinsmann is convinced the way to get the best out of players is to test their limits by making them uncomfortable. Clearly, it’s not working for Chandler. With Eintract he knows his role, he’s familiar with his teammates, the tactical plan is clear, and the result is he is a very solid Bundesliga outside back. You could say he gets none of those things from Klinsmann and is not responding.

  4. Yesterday I remember Chandler making a great cross into the box while being pretty tightly marked. The match announcer called it a great delivery. I remember one point in the Costa Rica game when Chandler was all along on the right with a teammate or two waiting in the box and Chandler kicked the ball into row g or so. Why does this guy look so good in the Bundesliga and so lousy in CONCACAF?

    • I know!!!! You could say the same about Omar Gonzalez (to a lesser degree). Funny thing is, most teams in the Bundesliga are better than Costa Rica and a few are better than Mexico.

  5. By far the most encouraging news from this day is that Josh Perez dressed for a Serie A team currently in the upper half of the table. Would be very cool if the youngster sees playing time with the first team at some point this season.
