Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach had a chance to keep up in the race to get out of their Champions League group. They failed.
Johnson and co. settled for a 1-1 draw with Celtic on Tuesday, bringing the German club’s total to four points from as many games. With two games remaining against Barcelona and Manchester City, Monchengladbach sits three points out of a second place spot that would seal a berth in the knockout round.
While Johnson was the only American to see the field in Champions League play, both Gedion Zelalem and Julian Green saw their sides seal nervy UCL wins as Bayern Munich beat PSV Eindhoven, 2-1, while Arsenal topped Ludogorets, 3-2.
Elsewhere, Gboly Ariyibi went a full 90 in Chesterfield’s 2-0 defeat to Coventry City.
