The Chicago Cubs weren’t the only team to break a major trophy drought on Wednesday night.
Queretaro topped Chivas de Guadalajra, 3-2, in penalty kicks to claim the Apertura’s Copa MX title. The win gives Queretaro the club’s first major trophy since debuting in 1950. Queretaro currently sits 14th on the Liga MX table while Chivas maintains fourth place.
Featuring American Jonathan Bornstein in his usual fullback position, Queretaro held strong in a scoreless draw, even following Andrés Rentería’s 71st minute red card for head-butt Chivas defender Miguel Ponce. Goalkeeper Tiago Volpi proved the hero on the day, making five stunning saves in regulation before truly shining during penalty kicks.
The Brazilian goalkeeper made two saves in the shootout while scoring one of his own to give Queretaro the lead heading into the fifth round. Alan Pulido’s shot was then pushed onto the right post, giving Queretaro a historic win.
Wednesday’s win gives Bornstein his second club trophy following a 2011 title with Tigres UANL, while fellow American Luis Gil, who wasn’t in the 18, claims his first.
Reading rumours on Brazilian media that Liga MX might announce this week that it will pull out of Copa Libertadores due to COMNEBOL changing the scheduling of the tournament.
Question of the day: Who is the more maligned USMNT player in recent years, Bornstein or Wondo? (I know some will suggest Jozy, but I didn’t list him on purpose).

I know there was some sarcasm here, but seriously the USMNT is not exactly stacked at the fullback position, especially on the left. Maybe it’s time to bring him back and take a look in a friendly match.
What I remember of Bornstein with the US is a lot of mental mistakes, not any physical problems keeping up with the pace of international games. Maybe a more mature and experienced player has emerged? I also remember he played quite well in the 2010 world cup. At leftback I believe.
They will always love him in Honduras when his goal against Costa Rica knocked them out of the 2010 WC and put Honduras in. Bornstein was a converted attacker, so he always had good speed. I think both he and Villafana should at least be brought in for some friendlies to see how well they can do.

With all due respect, you aren’t remembering correctly. Sure, he had some mental lapses but Bornstein was like an orange cone against anyone with speed or athleticism.
I know it’s just sports, and I have nothing personal against him as a person (probably a great guy), but he’s near the top of my list for all-time hated players to play for “my time” (regardless of sport). He’s a disaster waiting to happen and absolute liability at the international level.
