Lynden Gooch has established himself as a member of the Sunderland first team, but the U.S. Men’s National Team winger faces a major setback after picking up an injury while getting minutes on the reserve level.

Featuring for Sunderland’s reserves, Gooch was stretchered off during a game against Tottenham due to an apparent ankle injury. Prior to the injury, Gooch was involved in the opening goal of an eventual 2-2 draw. He was one of three senior team members with the reserve side on Monday.

“It was disappointing for Lynden,” said coach Andy Welsh. “We’ll have to assess him and see how it is.”

Gooch has made nine appearances for the Sunderland first team this season, including four starts.

Sunderland returns to action on Saturday against Leicester City.

    • He only played like 10 minutes,He’s probably had played under 45 minutes in the last 2 months. So I can see a desire to get him some real minutes.

    • Bear in mind I’m not defending a decision to play him in this match, but some things to consider:

      – Only played 11 minutes against Liverpool at 11/26
      – Was an unused substitute against Hull City on 11/19
      – Was a 5 minute stoppage time substitute against Bournemouth on 11/5
      – This was a U-23 match. Gooch is still only 20 years old.

When taking a step back, it’s not difficult to understand Sunderland/Moyes are intent of continuing his development. That is precisely what the U-23’s are for at the club level, and at 20 years old (and not a full-time starter), these matches are ideal for just that.

Injuries happen, unfortunately. Hindsight is always 20/20.

    • Without games and training, players will not improve so it is necessary. Players get injured, sometimes in games, sometimes in training.

He has hardly been getting too much time in games.
