Despite rumors linking him with a move abroad, Steve Birnbaum is reportedly set to remain with D.C. United.

ESPN reported Wednesday that D.C. United has agreed to a new four year-deal with the U.S. Men’s National Team defender. The 25-year old centerback has proven to be a key component of D.C.’s back four since being drafted in 2014.

The D.C. United defender had reportedly been a target of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv. Prior to the new deal, Birnbaum was still on his rookie-scale contract, but the defender has reportedly received a significant pay increase.

Birnbaum started 26 matches in 2016, providing solid defensive work in addition to three goals and two assists. His efforts were rewarded with several call ups to the USMNT, making eight appearances in 2016.

  1. Doesn’t mean he won’t still find work in Europe, Tel Aviv offered a low ball offer because he was relatively cheap for DC. A higher contract could influence a more reasonable offer next Summer.
