After scoring a goal over the weekend, Bobby Wood found himself on the bench for Wednesday’s clash with Schalke. However, when his time came, the U.S. Men’s National Team forward made the most of his opportunity yet again.

Wood scored an 82nd minute goal, and it turned out to be the game-winner as Hamburg topped Schalke, 2-1, on Wednesday. The goal was Wood’s sixth of the season for Hamburg, who now sit 16th in the Bundesliga table.

Christian Pulisic also saw action on Wednesday, but the USMNT winger was unable to push Borussia Dortmund past a resilient Augsburg side. After conceding midway through the first half, Dortmund bounced back via an Ousmane Dembele equalizer just two minutes into the second half. However, the club couldn’t quite find a winner as Dortmund lost ground on the four teams above them int he table.

Finally, Timmy Chandler turned in yet another solid performance, helping lift Eintracht Frankfurt to a 3-0 win over Mainz.

  1. His goal in the previous game was almost as good. Our attacking corps is looking pretty good right now. And what if AJ gets back into form? That would give us 4 very credible strikers, adding Morris to Wood and Altidore. With Pulisic and Zardes on the wings, that could be a lot of fire power.

  2. That goal is all Bobby Wood. Taking on two defenders from the right side of the penalty box takes a shot that splits the defenders and blasted past the keeper into the upper 90. If that manager doesn’t start Bobby in the next game perhaps the Hamburg board should sack the manager.

    • to a relegation-threatened team, all that matters is points, and hamburg have been on a relative (for them) hot streak ever since bobby’s suspension/benching. if anything—considering how conservative most managers are—i think hamburg’s manager would be hesitant to change anything right now, and the board won’t mind one bit.

the question is WHY IS HE COMING OFF THE BENCH

    • the “answer” to your question is that they have been doing (relatively) very well ever since he was suspended (11 points in 7 games, compared to 2 points in the previous 10) and with him coming off the bench.

i still think it’s the *wrong* answer, since i think the manager should be able to find a way to get one of their best—hell, one of their only—scorer(s) on the field, but it’s not like it comes out of nowhere.

    • He had gone 84 minutes on Saturday so on two days rest that seems reasonable. See what happens when the Bundesliga returns from break in a month. Wood will have opportunities in some friendlies to make his claim to the starting spot.
