New York City FC’s David Villa just won the MVP award, and despite reported European interest for a short loan spell, the Spaniard is staying at home.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Sporting Gijon, Villa’s first club, was interested in bringing him back on a short-term loan during the MLS off-season.

However, Villa told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope that he has not received any offers and wants to stay with NYCFC over the winter.

“I am under contract for another year. No one has contacted me,” said Villa. “It really makes no sense because the transfer window opens in Spain on Jan. 1 and I begin preseason training with New York City FC on Jan. 21.

“I will go to Spain on Dec. 16 for the holidays but will return to New York on Jan. 8 because my children have to go back to school.”

The 35-year-old scored 23 goals in 33 appearances during the 2016 regular season for NYCFC.
