The 2016 MLS Cup final was a TV rating success on both sides of the border.
Fox Sports announced that the 2016 MLS Cup attracted more than 1.4 million viewers, the highest number for an MLS final since 2001. The audience peaked at 2.15 million during the penalty shootout
The match viewership increased by 111 percent (668,000) from 2015’s broadcast on ESPN. This was Fox’s first MLS Cup final and 2016 marked a return to network TV for the first time since 2008.
Univision Deportes who had the Spanish-language rights in the U.S., drew more than 600,000 viewers on its network.
TSN, the Canadian rights holders for the final, also announced a record viewership of 1.5 million with a peak audience of 2.7 million. The network says 4.2 million people in Canada watched at least part of the game on the network.
