U.S. Men’s National TeamĀ forward Julian Green has completedĀ a transfer from Bayern Munich to VFB Stuttgart on Wednesday, and will join his new club when the transfer window opens in January.
The move comes as the 21-year-old seeks regular playing time, something that has continued to elude him at Bayern despite a promising preseason under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Green showed promise in preseason by netting a hat trick against Inter Milan, but he was never able to break into the forward depth chart, as he made two appearances in five months.
Stuttgart is currently in third place in 2. Bundesliga, making the club a strong contender for promotion to the Bundesliga, which means Green has the chance to playing in meaningful matches this season, and could return to the Bundesliga with Stuttgart next season.
Green impressed in recent appearances with the U.S. national team scoring in both of the team’s October friendlies, a win against Cuba and tie with New Zealand. The 21-year-old has earned eight caps for the USMNT, he famously made his debut during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, scoring a goal against Belgium in his lone World Cup appearance.

Green has the talent to be a contributor to the USMNT. What he lacks is experience and game fitness/sharpness. If this gets him to playing consistently, and VFB do get promoted this will be a good decision.
Brooks, Pulisic, Green, Gooch, CCV, Hyndman, Zelalem, etc….are the building blocks of the USMNT for years to come.
Love how no one reported on this until after he tweeted it
good now Zelalem, and Hydman need loans.
this move makes a lot of sense. credit to Green for finally making a move.
Damn. From Bayern Munich and the World Cup to the German second division.
How the mighty have fallen.
ridiculous statement alert ^
I’m not sure that this is a fall, or that Green was ever mighty. He was a perennial fringe player, seeing time during the summer tour in the US (ahem, marketing), time in the reserves and time on the youth team. He is now on an old German power, albeit, a second division team, where he may actually see the field.
The real question is whether Green is the next Jovan Kirovski?
It worked for Morales 1bl –> 2 bl –> 1bl and as a starter the first season of promotion.
Perfect timing, probably saw his USMNT time coming to an end without playing time. Hope Bruce sees the talent
VFB is in third place and level on points with 2nd place Hannover so the club could find itself back in the top division next year. Hopefully Green will get playing time this season and be earning Bundesliga minutes next season.
As Long As He Plays.
Good move, though a loan would have been better. Bayern is TOO stacked. Goetze couldn’t break into the lineup.
It will be interesting to see where on the field he plays.
it will be interesting to see IFhe plays on the field.
He should definitely play. The kid has talent and they pursued this deal. He had other options in Germany and Italy this past Summer, remember.
