MLS Ticker: Crew, Rapids linked with European transfers, RSL re-signs Maund

Jonathan Mensah

A pair of MLS clubs not known for making splashy moves could potentially turn some heads in the coming days with reported transfers, starting with the Columbus Crew.

The Crew are reportedly close to reaching a deal with Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah. The 26-year-old veteran of two World Cups currently plies his trade in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala, the club made famous by a few big-name signings led by Samuel Eto’o a few years ago.

Mensah would be acquired on a designated player deal. He would join Federico Higuain as the designated players on the Crew roster. The club has only had three DPs in its history. Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Andres Mendoza were the two others.

The Ghana international would be a direct replacement for Michael Parkhurst, who was sent to Atlanta United in a trade at the start of the offseason. Mensah would line up with fellow countryman Harrison Afful, who is the Crew’s right back, in the back line.

Rapids linked to Manchester City midfielder

The Colorado Rapids won’t have an easy time replacing Jermaine Jones, but appear ready to boost their midfield by adding a player who is currently owned by one of the top teams in the Premier League.

The Rapids are reportedly close to bringing in Manchester City midfielder Bismarck Adjei-Boateng. The 22-year-old has spent the last four seasons on loan at Stromsgodset in Norway. The central midfielder has never made an appearance for his parent club.

Adjei-Boateng would be expected to provide some depth in central midfield, which lost Jones, but still boasts Dillon Powers as well as defensive midfield starters Sam Cronin and Michael Azira, who helped the Rapids boast one of the league’s best defensive units. The Ghanaian can also provide some help in attack. He’s scored 17 goals in all competitions in his time in Norway.

Real Salt Lake Re-Sign Aaron Maund

Real Salt Lake made a move on Saturday, but not the one its been rumored to make all week.

There’s still no sign of a Landon Donovan acquisition, but the Claret and Cobalt did re-sign center back Aaron Maund on Saturday.

The 26-year-old American has made 51 appearances for RSL since joining the side from Toronto FC in 2013. He has one goal and an assist with RSL, both of which came in 2015.
