Ventura Alvarado is moving on to a new club.

Following nine years at Club America, U.S. Men’s National Team defender signed with fellow Liga MX side Santos Laguna on Friday. With the move, Alvarado joins fellow American defender Jorge Villafana at the Mexican club.

The move comes for a player in search of playing time. Alvarado recently made three appearances for Club America at right back during the club’s Apertura Liguilla campaign, but the central defender made just three appearances in regular season play. Club America remains in the hunt for the Apertura crown following a 1-1 draw with Nexaca in the first leg of the semifinal round.

The defender reportedly explored an MLS move during the summer, but remained with Club America to fight for first-team minutes. He will now push for those minutes with a Santos Laguna team that finished 16th this past season, surrendering 30 goals in 17 games.

Alvarado joined Club America’s first team in 2012, and featured 40 times throughout his stay with the club. In 2013, the centerback spent a season on loan with Necaxa, making 21 appearances. In addition to two Liga MX titles, Alvarado’s biggest highs came in Club America’s runs through the CONCACAF Champions League, a competition he won twice during his stay with the club.

  1. Tough league to find stability in… players are moved a lot….. and… gain confidence in your manager is great but coaches in the MX are changed like underwear. Hopefully he find some playing time as he is still young with potential. The prospect of VA playing internationally has gotten harder at CB… this position for the USMNT has solidified quite a bit in the last few years with lotsa good young options developing.
