Emerson Hyndman joins Rangers on loan

A young U.S. Men’s National Team prospect is off to a club where several Americans have enjoyed a good amount of success.

After a rough six months at Bournemouth in the English Premier League, Emerson Hyndman has signed a loan deal with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. The move comes just a few days after Hyndman made a rare appearance for Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round against Millwall. Saturday’s start was one of just three cup appearances the midfielder made while with Eddie Howe’s side.

Hyndman’s switch to Bournemouth from Fulham in the summer was supposed to be a step in the right direction for the grandson of former FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman, but he never found a position in the first team. The lack of playing time also dropped him down the midfield depth chart on the international level.

Hyndman has made a pair of senior-team appearances for the USMNT, with the last one coming in May against Puerto Rico. He was also the captainĀ of the U.S. U-20 World Cup team in New Zealand in 2015.

  1. Neither Hyndman or Zelalem are able to handle physical play very well. Going to the SPL isn’t a bad way to learn the importance of getting the ball off your foot in a timely manner, or learning how to absorb hits….like the kind they’ll get playing in CONCACAF. So long as he get’s playing time I don’t see a problem with this loan.

I say this even though I’m not a fan of the SPL….

  2. If Kitchen is on arenas radar playing at Hearts then u would think if emo gets regular playing time he would be also

    • Kitchen’s tough DM skill set and temperment is ideal for Scotland. But touch mids in Scotland aren’t going to get to dribble around forever on offense, without getting smashed, and they will be judged harshly if they don’t get stuck in on defense.

The passer kids are better off in passing leagues, not rough and tumble ones. At least not unless they plan on adapting.

  3. I think this is a solid move. While we here in the states look down on the SPL, teams in the EPL do not. Rangers have a solid manager who plays more of an attacking style, he did well with the development of Zalalem. BVB thought enough of it to take a shot at Gediom, and if Emerson does well I expect him to play next year in the EPL.

  4. If anyone paid attention when he was signed, Bournemouth made it no secret that Emerson wasn’t likely to see much time with the first team this season. The signing of Jack Wilshire in August made that even more apparent. Certainly being injured during training camp didn’t help as did the club being knocked out of the League Cup and now the FA Cup early on. Bournemouth’s reserve squad plays in the 4th division of youth football in England so it hardly seems worth it stick around just for those matches.

The kid is only 20 slow down the bust train a little bit. Claudio Reyna was still in college at age 20, John O’Brien hadn’t played a professional match at age 20, and Michael Bradley had just broken in with Herenveen, but didn’t have his breakout year until he was 21.

    • SPL is more of a hard tackling league like MLS. I don’t know if this is a showcase for his talents any more than Zelalem’s, and this move really didn’t kickstart his career, either. There’s a whole set of these guys that were getting NT looks before Pulisic who he has pushed right past.

What happened to Holland or Scandinavia? Or perhaps Spain? These guys seem like touch players. Instead of going to a brute force league, go play someplace your qualities are appreciated and leveraged.

      • You have to remember Bournemouth is new to the big stage. They don’t have a lot of relationships with clubs in other leagues like Spain or Netherlands. They haven’t loaned anyone outside of the FA in the last four years and only transferred one player to the Netherlands (which was his home country). They’ve only had a couple of players they’ve even transferred in over the last few years as well, most coming before 2015-16 when they made their arrival in the EPL. They aren’t Chelsea or ManU that have loan arrangements across the continent.
