Emerson Hyndman made quite the impression in his first start for Rangers.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder scored an 87th minute goal on Saturday, helping lead Rangers to a 2-0 win over Motherwell in his first extended run out for the Scottish club. The goal comes in Hyndman’s second overall appearance since joining the club on loan from Bournemouth on Jan. 9.

“I wouldn’t call myself a goalscorer,” Hyndman said, “but I try to get in and around the box and who knows? When you get chances you have to try and put them away and I had two today and luckily I scored one.”

Both sides were reduced to 10 men early, with Rangers going down a man within the first five minutes due to a Michael O’Halloran dismissal. Motherwell’s Scott McDonald was sent off in the 27th minute to even the odds, but Rangers failed to break through until a 72nd minute finish from former Vancouver Whitecaps forward Kenny Miller. Hyndman’s goal came 10 minutes later, sealing the win for Rangers.

Here’s a closer look at Hyndman’s finish:

  1. It is good to see that he looks much thicker now. I remember watching the U20 World Cup a few years ago and he was skinny but it looks likes hes added a good bit of muscle. He should take Gedion to the weight room with him some time.

  2. Both his assists have come off CBs passing the ball right to him. Nagbe should be offering to pay MLS his own transfer fees with that quality of defender.

    • He didn’t get an assist today, but he helped create the chance with a nice 1-2 and then a great through ball. Not sure what you’re talking about. The assist he had in the cup match was a result him popping up in a passing lane and getting a gift turnover. It was how quickly he played the through ball to Miller that made the goal, though.

      • Saw the video early this morning on my phone after someone had commented he created the first goal, didn’t realize the site was showing the assist from his first match. No wonder I thought it was so similar. I still hold that was a terrible pass by the CB, terrific ball from Hyndman to set up the goal though.

  3. I’m glad to see Hyndmann seeing some success. He may not be ready this cycle, but the next cycle should be very interesting with some of the players we’re likely to have at our disposal…. Pulisic, Hyndman, Zelalem, Green, Gooch, Perez, Arriola,

It’s hard to imagine us not playing a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 next cycle.

    • He is ready for this cycle, and Bruce needs to call him in if he keeps this up in the coming weeks. I’ve watched both games, and he not only scored today, but he’s had a hand in all 4 of Ranger’s recent goals – in 135 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Jon Toral has been an disappointment by comparison.

Today he was phenomenal. All over the place, combining well, protecting the ball, and teleporting passes. He was picking up the ball from the centerbacks and slicing behind Motherwell’s defense all game. And they were down to 10 men in the 5th minute. Another thing I was surprised by was that he was in the ref’s face for every poor call – time and time again.
