Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj is set to be joined by another fellow American.

Chesterfield winger Gboly Ariyibi is set to join Lichaj in the English League Championship, making the move up from League One as he seals a move to join his countryman at Forest on deadline day according to Sky Sports. Ariyibi joins a team currently sitting 19th in the Championship, far from hopes of promotion and just five points clear of the relegation line, a position not unfamiliar to the American winger, as Chesterfield sits similarly situated in League One.

Aryibi has a great deal of experience in England’s pyramid, originally coming up through the Southampton youth ranks alongside regulars such as Luke Shaw before joining Leeds United for his first professional deal in 2013. After just five months and four appearances, with two coming on loan with Tranmere Rovers, Ariyibi departed and signed with Chesterfield in August 2014, reportedly declining a deal from Premier League side Burnley in the process.

With Chesterfield, Ariyibi has appeared in 75 matches, scoring three goals in his time with the team. During this time, Ariyibi also featured for the U.S. U-20 and U-23 Men’s National Teams, though he also remains eligible for Nigeria and England as well.

  1. After watching one highlight tape of this kid, I am excited. Has anyone watched enough of him to give me a more accurate description of this kid’s talent and potential?

    • Yeah since he’s been playing in the 3rd division I don’t know much about him but if his Fifa poteintal rating is anything to go by then he could be a future player for usmnt.

    • I can tell you that he is fast, good size at 6’1, able to use both feet. Because of his speed, he can play on the wings, usually the left. He also has excellent dribbling skills and killer moves which allowed his coach to try him as a 10 in a couple of games. You are probably wondering if he is that good, why hasn’t he broken through for a bigger club? Well, according to his coach Ariyibi’s issue is being weak mentally. He will give up if he feels he is getting bullied by the coach. He will also dog a game if his teammates don’t play at his level. He is clearly one of the better players in his team but because of it, the fans will ride him hard if he gives up on a game.

      • I have heard that he was upset his club wouldnt accept any of the offers he had from championship sides before this transfer window. He may have had a bad attitude because his club was basically holding him hostage and wouldnt let him move up to better competition.
