Joe Gyau is reportedly on the move from Borussia Dortmund.

According to German publication RevierSport, Gyau is set to join SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach in the 3. Liga, the third division on the German pyramid. The 24-year-old reportedly leaves BVB on a free transfer for Sonnenhof Grossaspach, who is currently in seventh place in the 3. Liga, four points adrift of a promotion playoff spot.

Gyau’s move would come in an effort to gain playing time after suffering two serious knee injuries. The winger joined Dortmund from Hoffenheim in 2014, but has made just two appearances since 2015.

Gyau scored two goals in 13 appearances with BVB II and played in two games for Dortmund’s first team.

  1. Other Americans in the 3Bundesliga

David Yelldell is the back up keeper for Sonnenhof.

Germerican Jann Christopher is tied for third in the league in goals scored this season with 8 for Regensberg.

Shawn Berry is a regular starter in midfield for FSV Frankfurt.

  2. Even though the quality maybe less the chance of making it back at a higher level in Europe is much greater by staying in Europe. MLS will always be there if he can still get up and down the field (which is an unknown at this point as to how fast he is).

Gyau has played 66 Bundesliga minutes and 550 minutes in the 2 Bundesliga, and at 24 coming off a two year lay off the 3Bundesliga is probably about right. At least outwardly BvB has always treated Joe well seems they did him a solid in allowing him to move to find the playing time he wasn’t going to get in Dortmund (remember when we all were worried CP who is more skilled than Gyau was 2 years ago wouldn’t get playing time in this lineup). His transfer value was estimated at 100,000 Euros and with 6 months left on his contract a free transfer was most likely the only way he’d move.

Yeah, something must be wrong with him.

      • According to Bild he hasn’t reported back to the club after the holidays because St. Pauli has told him to find a new club. I don’t speak German but from the translation I read it sounds like they didn’t like his work ethic and questioned how injured he really has been.

Looking at his Instagram he had been home in Florida, but posted a picture from Italy today.

    • I have zero interest as a RBNY supporter. What has Gyau done to show that he is good enough for MLS at this point? Because 2+ years and several knee injuries ago he made a 15 minute cameo for Dortmund?

      • What had Mike Grella done when he signed with NYRBs? He was healthy I suppose, but hadn’t done much of anything above the 3rd level of English football and that was mostly off the bench.

    • Teams are scared because of his injury. Why invest in a guy if you do not know if he will fully recover. Sad, but it is what it is. That is why I am for athletes getting as much guaranteed money as they can. If this does not work out, his career would be over.

      • I’m pretty sure your reason is spot on. The injuries suffered were career ending ones, coming on top of each other. The fact that he can still play German football is awesome. But he needs to get playing time and to prove he is past his injuries. If he is, he will be bought by a D2 German team, if not, his career is pretty much over.Bur now he will playing for his career.

  4. I know he is trying to bounce back but a div 2 side would have been perfect and good enough. I know this move is to gain confidence too.

    • Not to tease you or anyone else but comments like yours make me laugh. For weeks people here have been making comments about how Gyau is up there in our wing USMNT pool and blah blah. So just because he is back to training from years of injury all of a sudden he is USMNT worthy and exactly in the same form as before?? Of course not. And I know you didn’t imply that but others have. In your comment you make it seem as if going to a third division side was all up to Gyau like if he said to himself, “Hmm I don’t want to go to a Bundesliga side or even a 2 Bundesliga side, I think I prefer the 3rd division”. People need to realize that until he proves otherwise he is damaged goods. He is Greg Oden as of right now (if you know your basketball). Hopefully he can prove otherwise but time will tell. Don’t hold your breath. Other clubs and leagues probably see it the same way.

      • So because I am saying Gyau can do better you get in your feelings ranting. Good job cosigning for nothing, damaged goods does not mean anything a lot of players it happens to and bounce back.

      • “you get in your feelings ranting”.. whatever that means.

Wait until he actually proves that he can bounce back before you assume he can do better. That is my point. If he could have done better he probably would have (probably not much interest from teams).
