Report: Soldier Field to host 2017 MLS All-Star Game

Fans at Soldier Field

The MLS All-Star Game appears to be headed back to an Eastern Conference site after three years out west.

According to Chicago Business, the 2017 edition of the game will be played at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2. The report claims an announcement will be made next week about the game, which has recently pitted the MLS All-Stars against a team from Europe.

Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal were the last three guests to play in the All-Star Game during their respective preseason tours, but there’s a growing amount of support for the league to change the format again, with an East vs. West game being one of the options.

Chicago last hosted the All-Star Game in 2006, when it took place at Toyota Park, the current home of the fire. The last All-Star Game to be played outside of an existing MLS stadium was the 2010 event at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

  1. with more/better/younger dp’s in the league than ever before, I think east vs. west sounds better than ever. imagine the line ups with the best 11 players from the east and the best 11 players from the west all on the field at the same time. would be pretty awesome, yes? to me, that’s what the all star game is supposed to be about. but if they keep the current format, I’m okay with that, too.

  2. It’s never going to end, the way it is now. Accept it.

There is no way they are renting Soldier Field for East-West.
Mexico All stars vs MLS All Stars would be my choice, but doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and first game, that big of a stadium? No.

    • As a Chicago resident (transplant from Kansas City), let me just say there’s nothing “casual” about the soccer fan up here in Chicago. They’re passionate, knowledgeable and offer a rabid fan base from varying backgrounds all over the globe.

The problem isn’t the fan base. The problem is MLS and it’s utter failure in this market. Too bad Don “Barnum and Bailey’s Circus” Garber is too obsessed with retreads like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and the quagmire that will be Miami instead of focusing on the sleeping giant it has here.

      • I didn’t know the MLS commissioner constructed that dumpster fire of a roster the last couple of years.

He gets the credit. He gets the blame. That’s the way MLS is set up, and to pretend otherwise is burying your head in the sand and denying reality.

Chicago needs to be Chivas-style relegated and hit the reset button. Until the league commissioner, who has a direct impact on all on-goings within MLS (because…that’s the way it’s set up), feigning ignorance as fans doesn’t absolve him from responsibility of the failures, too.

      • i agree with dawn kiebals. you can’t blame the league commissioner for chicago’s recent poor results.

        Recent?

They’re the epitome of ineptitude, apathy & embarrassment to the fans and league. Per a separate conversation/thread: the lack of relegation encourages and parity-rewarding mediocrity mechanism exacerbates the problem and drags down the overall quality of the league.

The sooner they give them their Chivas-style axe, the better the league will be. Everything about that franchise is a joke to local residents…including it’s location.

      • chicago united fc with an ownership group of about 60 important people with chicago ties including billionaires, michael jordan, hugh hefner, george wendt (‘norm’/cheers), actor/comedian bernie mac, maybe mr. t, gary chandling (comedian), singer chaka khan and musician herbie hancock. lose the fire station motif and rebrand. i feel ya old school with the reboot thing hope u get it cuz watch lafc is gonna kick azzzzzzzzz in la. chivas who?
