Throughout the past several months, DeAndre Yedlin has put together a rapid rise through the Championship. The U.S. Men’s National Team regular’s ascendancy has seen many recognize him as one of the Championship’s best fullbacks, if not the best.
He’ll have another chance to prove in on Monday as he looks to push Newcastle into first place.
Yedlin and Newcastle face off with Aston Villa on Monday in a match that could see the Magpies leapfrog Brighton atop the Championship standings. Newcastle has earned points in each of their four games since an upset loss to Oxford United in the FA Cup as the club pushes towards an automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The USMNT fullback has been a vital part of that push after several up-and-down months to start his Newcastle tenure. Yedlin has played 10 times since the start of the new year and has now appeared in 19 total matches since joining Newcastle over the summer.
Yedlin isn’t the only American defender in action, though, as Shane O’Neill takes the field for NEC Breda. The former Colorado Rapids centerback has started 16 matches since joining the Dutch club on loan from Apollon, helping lead NEC Breda to eighth in the table.
Here’s a closer look at Monday’s Americans Abroad:

This article from the Chronicle is a great read on Yedlin and his development at Newcastle. It is from right after Christmas:
