It took Julian Green just two appearances to make his mark for his new club.
Green scored his first goal for Stuttgart, firing the second of two first half goals in Monday’s clash with Fortuna Dusseldorf. The finish comes in Green’s second appearance for the club after previously playing 45 minutes in his 2. Bundesliga debut.
The 21-year-old’s finish came just seven minutes following Stuttgart’s opener, which saw forward Simon Terodde fire the hosts into the lead. Green’s goal was a volleyed finish, as the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team winger rifled home a first-time shot on a cross in from Anto Grgic.
Green’s finish was his first career senior league goal.
Here’s a closer look at the goal:

I thought Green was good enough to get picked up by a mid-level Bundesliga team, but if Stuttgart is promoted, that’s okay since he’ll be playing division 1 football next year. Boyd got the start this weekend, as did Mortales and Wood and Pulisic has often started. If Johannsson can regain his form and start, too, that would give us 6 attacking players playing in the Bundesliga next year (assuming Wood’s, Morales’, and AJ’s teams avoid relegation). That would be awesome.
I’m concerned about both Boyd and Johansson getting healthy and staying healthy! Johansson’s career seems to have been on ice since the last WC because of injury and now coaching decisions hampering him. When healthy he is right up there with Altidore and Wood
If Boyd does not re-establish himself in the Germany a move to MLS could be a positive option. Boyd would be a great replacement for Adi in Portland if he gets sold this year
I think it is a good move. He needed playing time. Now, he needs to exploit this opportunity. I know he wanted to break into the Bayern regular rotation, but the front 6 (and the attacking wings/wing forward/forward substitutes) are too good. The loan to Hamburg 2 seasons before was a disaster/not good, but he really should have gone out last season. He ended getting passed by.
People forget, but he is 3 years younger than Bobby Woof and 1 year younger than Jordan Morris.
Bobby woof!
lol
It’s getting increasingly obvious Green is one heckuva natural finisher, people.
Also like his technical ability, speed – he’s not super-quick like Nagbe but he’s very deceptive and eats up ground and can certainly separate with his runs – and his comfort level on the ball.
For all the hand-wringing about his inclusion in Brazil, I think he’s potentially the best player on the USMNT…yes, maybe even better than Pulisic. Is Pulisic as fast as Green, and does he finish as well?
Green needed regular time at a good level and some lead in his butt but he’s obviously starting to get that and I very much doubt he will be on a B2 team this time next year.
I think he’s going to beat out even Nagbe as our left wing.
I like Green and am happy to see him finally getting minutes & succeeding at the club level. Now if he does actually advance enough to claim the starting LM or LW position with the USMNT than it allows us to have Pulisic as the RM and potentially Nagbe as one of the central midfielders.
Honestly a 4-1-3-2 formation along the following midfield…
—–Green———-Nagbe———-Pulisic——
would be very entertaining. They have the speed to get in behind, the creativity to set up the forwards, or to create their own opportunities.
I was thinking the same three! However, interchange with the three with Nagbe mostly in middle. All three would need an extremely high workrate especially balancing the field and reacting to counters.
The problem is who will play behind them? I’m sorry but Feilhaber and Kljestan do have the physical intangibles on both D and O.
Either way some offensive talent, speed, possession, vision, and IQ is in the pipeline
I agree with regarding Green pushing out Nagbe as a starting left wing or left forward in a 4-3-3, and I am a huge as Nagbe fan, Oregonian as well (meaning Timbers fan). I would love to see Nagbe as Green’s backup, a true super sub situation assuming a motivated Nagbe, which in a World Cup he would be.
No edit option?
Correction: I agree with you
Agree quozzel. If we go back and look at the tape from the pre season game against Inter he took all three on the first touch. Not a single set up touch. Bayern’s boss was convinced his future was at striker and not on the wing but his size hurts him. He’s perfect for the 4-3-3 up top with a big striker in the middle. His goal in 2014 WC was the same first touch out of the air off Bradley’s service. Imagine him in the 4-3-3 with Pulisic sending him service. This is the future of USMNT.
The touch on that goal has nothing to do with his opponent. That’s what you should focus on.
Class.
The MLS is fine. But C’mon, Cameron Carters Vickers has to stop Harry Kane in practice. Julian Green was on the field with Lewandowski, Muller, Ribary and Robben. The talent level they play with and against is at a different level. Bradley should have stayed in Italy. He has not played the same since. He doesn’t have to.
You said Gooch tho.
It’s good to see he found his level.
And it seems you have found yours. But then again, maybe you can go lower.
Crushed it, Byrdman
Bundesliga 2 now, Bundesliga 1 in 6 months.
Take a long walk off a short pier, bob!
Nice finish. Keep it up.
That’s great technique to hit that out of the air on the run. I hope that Green really lights it up for Stuttgart. He just came off in the 61st, I think he’ll need a few more games before he consistently goes 90.
There’s a long way to go but I’m hoping they get promoted! (Also rooting for Newcastle and VVV Venlo!)
I love that our younger guys are going to 2 tier teams to get minutes. Mess around and become a starter on a team that can get back into the 1st tier… I’d love it if all of our young-ish guys played for teams like Bobby Wood
this is what i like to hear and it makes sense. Julian probably should have made this move a few years ago but here we are and the early returns seem to be trending upwards. There is nothing that can mimic actual game minutes and if going to a lower level as a younger player to get minutes to further ones develoment, i say why not. Wooten, Stanko and even Morales last season, are taking advantage of the minutes at lower levels and still managed call ups so circumstance is everything!
Bro, you should have said Pulisic. Woods team look highly likely they gonna get relegated.
No one on the field against Jamaica could take that ball out of the air and slide it into the corner like he did today.
Julian made the final 18 for Bayern Munich. He needs to be starting with Pulisic, Johnson, Yedlin, Wood, Cameron, Chandler, CCV , Morales or Gooch. The players that can make Bundesliga or Premier league are in class above the MLS.
i guess you don’t recall Benny Feilhabers one time volley, versus mexico, in the gold cup final, from 20 yds out several years ago?? But keep making it about european players versus our domestic players. I really want to know why some of us as fans tend to diminish the accomplshments of our MLS and mexican players in opposition to our european contigent?! No one has ever said the domestic leagues here are on the level of european leagues that have been up and running for hundreds of years. The reality is simply that some players don’t think it benefits them to play in europe and some are just not good or ambitious enough, it’s life and it happens. Shouldn’t we as USA fans root for all of our players to do well and not makes excuses because of the league they play, it’s just plan silly to me and i would be willing to bet fans in other countries don’t resort to this level of pettiness.
Do your homework, Benny was playing in Germany when he scored that fabulous goal. That had nothing to do with MLS.
Why is it a problem to want players playing at the highest levels rather than the MLS. If any country could have their players playing in the best leagues that’s what they would ask for, it’s not a knock on MLS it’s just it’s not a top league. I don’t think it is being a eurosnob it’s reality.
Really, you think that Gooch is a class above Zardes or Altidore or Bradley? On what basis? Pure eurosnobbery!
I’d take Arriola over Gooch personally. Looked much better as a youth and is scoring goals now.
Ken 100%,
Not a lot of people in our US pool can make the final 18 for Bayern
Not a lot of people in our US pool can score a hat-trick for Bayern II
Not a lot of people in our US pool can score a hat trick against Inter Milan (on any given day)
Not a lot of people in our US pool can play on the same team with the likes of Thomas Müller, Renato Sanches, Philipp Lahm and Jérôme Boateng AND SCORE
Can you image…

……the speed, one-touch abilities, ball control of a Pullisic, Wood, Nagbe, Green attack?
The future looks bright
I am equally as excited about said combination of players. Nice scouting video of Green!
I scored 3 –
There is nothing wrong with wanting the top players to be playing at a high level in Europe. It’s very different from having a belief that ANY player in Europe must be better than ANY player in MLS
That’s a fluke goal. The ball hit the lower part of his ankle when he should have struck it with his instep. Really doesn’t mean much other than just being lucky.
Really??? This is your reply Danny?
Argghh Matey, me thinks it be sarcasm!
nice goal!!
Poor JG. He scores a nice goal, makes his celebratory run, turns around with his arms open wide to greet the rush of teammates congratulating him….. and no one’s there.
Nice volley. Kid’s put on some muscle, finally, too.
