Timbers will not sign Adu following preseason stint

Freddy Adu v CAR

Freddy Adu recently joined the Portland Timbers for preseason training, but that’s all that will come out of the midfielder’s stay with the team.

According to head coach Caleb Porter, Adu will not join the Timbers for the upcoming MLS season. The news comes just two weeks after Adu joined the club for the start of MLS preseason. Adu played in two of the team’s three preseason friendlies, logging a total of 75 minutes.

“Freddy is no longer with us,” Porter said, according to Oregon Live. “He had two weeks and we were up front and honest with him about where we’re at. More than anything, you look at the depth, there’s just not going to be a spot.”

Adu had previously played under Caleb Porter while a member of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team.

The Timbers return to action Thursday for a friendly against Real Salt Lake at Providence Park.
