Americans Abroad Wednesday Rewind: Arriola, Pulisic, Cameron

While Christian Pulisic tore Benfica apart in Portugal, another young American netted a game-winning goal back in Mexico.

Paul Arriola scored Tijuana’s lone goal in Wednesday’s Copa MX action, leading his side to a 1-0 win over Club America. Arriola was joined in the Tijuana lineup by Joe Corona and Michael Orozco, who both logged 90 minute shifts in the win.

Back in Europe, Christian Pulisic was far and away the star of the day, providing a goal and and an assist to lead Borussia Dortmund in a 4-0 win over Benfica. Pulisic’s goal proved to be the tie-winning goal, helping the German club seal a berth in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile in England, Geoff Cameron went 90 minutes again for Stoke City, helping the Potters earn a scoreless draw with Manchester City.

Here’s a full look at Wednesday’s Americans Abroad:

Christian Pulisic scored A GOAL and provided AN ASSIST in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Benfica.

Geoff Cameron started and played 90 minutes in Stoke City’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

Paul Arriola played 90 minutes and scored A GOAL in Tijuana’s 1-0 win over Club America.

Michael Orozco started and played 90 minutes for Tijuana.

Joe Corona started and played 90 minutes for Tijuana.

Alejandro Guido, Amando Moreno and John Requejo did not dress for Tijuana.

William Yarbrough did not dress in Leon’s 1-0 loss to Cruz Azul.

Jorge Villafana started and played 90 minutes in Santos Laguna’s 3-1 win over Necaxa.

Ventura Alvarado dressed but did not play for Santos Laguna.

  1. I watched the video about 4 times and Arriola was clearly offsides. But he showed good composure in putting the ball through the GK’s legs.

    • i don’t think he was, the backline were on different levels trying to push up in an attempt to make the Tijuana attackers offside but looked to be one defender not in step with the rest of the backline that kept him onside from viewpoint

    • He’s on by my view, use the initial view and pause it as the ball is played, there is a CA player in the circle and if you follow the lines on the field turf Arriola is onside.

    • Since Alvarado joined Santos

Ventua – Liga Mx 1 appearance 22 mins (5 dressed DNP) Copa Mx 4 appearances 3 starts 273 minutes

Jorge – Liga Mx 0 appearances (3 dressed DNP) Copa Mx 5 appearances all starts 450 minutes

Both are behind teenagers who took over the starting FB positions in October and have not looked back. Alvarado is also battling the previous starter who was a first team starter for 3 and 1/2 years. Both need to step it up.

  2. Random thought: Paul Arriola looks…normal size…these kinds of pictures, and then when you see him on the pitch, he looks even smaller than his listed 5’6.

I believe Messi, for instance, is listed at 5’6 as well, but Arriola looks smaller than him.
