Wood scores late winner to lead Hamburg past Borussia Moenchengladbach

With time ticking down, Bobby Wood stepped up, earning his side three points that could be vital in a relegation battle.

Wood scored an 80th minute winner on Sunday, leading Hamburg to a 2-1 win over Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach. With the win, Hamburg moves into a tie on points with 15th- place Werder Bremen  although Aron Johannson and co. maintain the edge on goal differential.

Entering the game’s final 10 minutes, Wood and Hamburg found themselves level as Filip Kostic and Andreas Christiansen exchanges early goals. In the 80th minute, Wood found the ball at his feet as he rose from a contested header. The USMNT forward fired a shot after taking a touch, rifling his effort into the back of the net to seal a win.

On the other side, Fabian Johnson entered as a second half substitute, joining the fray in the 57th minute.

Here’s a closer look at Wood’s goal:

  1. American’s in the Bundesliga

    Wood 5 goals (9 total)
    Johnson 3 goals (4 total)
    Pulisic 3 goals (4 total)
    Johannsson 1 goal
    Boyd 1 goal
    Morales 1 goal

14 goals one more than Mexico, and that has to be an American record.

    • I have been a big fan of Bobby Wood for years…even defending him when people were slamming Klinsman for plying him 2 years ago. However, to say tremendous is a little over the top. The guy has 5 goals and about 25 more players in the Bundesliga have scored more than him in the league. I like him because he has a nose for the goal, and would have a better goal total at a better team ( I think he is double digit goal scorer in my mind: about 12/13 goals).

      • Anthony I know you aren’t as high on bobby as some of us, tremendous is definitely a stretch but its very apparent he has the composure along with a lot of other qualities to continue growing in the league. And I will stick by what I said, he could compete to start for any team aside from Bayern and Dortmund.

      • No…actually I am very high on Bobby. I have been following him for a while (I tend to follow of US youth players. I have been big on Arriola for about 4 years (as well as Hyndman and Zelalem)). That being said, at this point, he has the quality to challenge for a mid-tier Bundesliga club starting forward position. There are about 4/5 forwards who are at least a class a=or two above him.

  2. Also had a goal (correctly) ruled out for offside on the assisting player. Wood was all over the place for Hamburg tonight. Not scoring at as high a clip, but it’s easy to see why he’s highly rated.

    • He was a constant threat and his play was pretty close to terrific throughout most of the game. It was one of the best games I’ve seen him play. Hamburg deserved the win because they played with more effort and energy.

      • How many players would still be laying there whining as the ball rolled by? I was surprised that is only his 5th goal in league play, his first since December 20th. If you include his DFP goals against Gladbach and Koln he does have 7 against Bundesliga opponents in 21 matches.

    • Clyde if you are not in the US you will get that message because Fox isn’t the Bundesliga provider where you are. Just try a google video search or youtube search and I am sure you will find many versions of the highlights.
