Yedlin set to miss time with thigh injury

Crucial World Cup qualifiers loom, and the U.S. Men’s National Team has reason to be concerned with an injury to a star defender.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez says DeAndre Yedlin could be out one or two weeks after suffering a slight tear in his thigh. Yedlin was kept out of Tuesday’s draw with Leeds United as a result of the injury, which was picked up in Newcastle’s win against Brighton and Hove Albion last week.

“Yedlin didn’t realize he had the problem against Brighton,” Benitez said. “We protected him against Huddersfield, but he had to come on. But he was complaining, and you could see that maybe it would be one week or two weeks. He had a knock, maybe has a small tear.”

The news comes just a few weeks before the U.S. faces a pair of crucial World Cup qualifiers. After falling to Mexico and Costa Rica in the opening matches of the Hexagonal, the U.S. is set to take on Honduras on March 24 before heading to Panama four days later.

Yedlin has made 23 league appearances for Newcastle this season.

  1. If Yedlin isn’t healthy enough to go both games, I think now you have to bring in Chandler for the second game. If Yedlin appears to be ok, you can’t bring in Chandler and run the risk of no back-up in case Yedlin gets reinjured in game 1..
I think Fabian is sitting there thinking… Well I’m probably playing outside back somewhere at some time..
    Who knows… this just sucks

    • Garza looked pretty good in his first game with Atlanta, Zusi wasn’t bad at DC… Just never been a chandler fan at the national level.

      • Garza was playing really well in Mexico before his hip injury. When he was first called up before he got hurt I was surprised he looked slow… So that jury is still out.
Everyone hates Chandler.. he is at the top of the list for everything wrong with Dual Nats to travel to sucking in Intl play to having bad teeth and he waddles instead of runs…
He’s also playing as good as anyone we have playing in Europe right now believe it or not.. In that Bayern game a few months ago it was like 1 vs 11… and the 1 was a beast…
But I know…he’s still ugly and he waddles

    • yeah, not good at all! However, this could be a glorious opportunity for Lichaj to get back into the team and make his mark. He has been one of our consistent euro players for years now and wasn’t given a serious look under JK, hopefully that changes. Zusi will also be in the mix now for sure and it begs the question of do you even bother bringing in Yedlin or Chandler for these two matches considering their injury and suspension issues??

      • Spector has also played a lot of RB in the past. And you also have Mexican leaguers like Castillo, maybe Orozco.

      • Gary please don’t ever mention either Castillo or Orozco as options for the USNT. Neither is worth a damn at the international level and have proven it time & time again. As Ronniet said this is a prime opportunity for Lichaj to be tried, if Yedlin isn’t healthy, as he’s been a consistent contributor for Forrest. If he doesn’t cut it against Honduras @ Home than the fallback is Chandler on the road in Panama.
Another option would be shift Fabian to RB and insert Garza/Villafana at LB for the first game. Than in the 2nd revert back to Fabian at LB & Yedlin/Chandler at RB for the 2nd.

And for those suggesting Zusi I hope this is sarcastic. Zusi showed that he wasn’t up to being a RB during the January Camp. Unless he can show drastic improvement at the position with Sporting KC this season he shouldn’t be considered at all for the national team.
