Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Wood, Corona and more

Bobby Wood may not have been healthy enough to join the U.S. Men’s National Team for World Cup qualifying, but the Hamburg forward proved fit enough to help lead his club to a vital victory.

Wood provided an assist on Saturday, helping lead Hamburg to a vital win over Cologne as the club looks to battle out of the relegation zone. He wasn’t the only American to set up a goal, though, as Joe Corona did the same for Tijuana in a 2-2 draw with Atlas.

In England, Danny Williams and Tim Ream saw their sides continue their push for a promotion playoff spot while David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town slumped to a frustrating defeat. German soccer was headlined by Timmy Chandler’s efforts in a 0-0 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, while John Brooks and Hertha Berlin slumped to a defeat.

Elsewhere, Mix Diskerud earned a start for his new club while Gedion Zelalem’s VVV Venlo fell in a lopsided defeat to Shane O’Neill and NAC Breda. Perry Kitchen and Hearts suffered the same fate, falling, 5-0, to Celtic in a match that saw the latter clinch the league crown.

Comments

  1. Also Groningen announced it was not going to resign Payne for next season so it seems unlikely he will get much time from here on out.

Gooch went 88 minutes for Sunderland U23 as they advanced to the final of the Premier League International Cup with 1-0 victory over Norwich U23s. Its kind of a England based youth Europa League, 12 English youth sides and 12 Euro based youth sides in a group stage then knockout stage tournament. Sunderland will face Porto in the final. Gooch has been pretty much relegated to U23 duty the second half of the season.
