Saturday European Rewind: Sunderland relegated, Bayern wins fifth straight Bundesliga title, and more

After several recent years of last-minute survivals, Sunderland suffered relegation for the first time since 2005-06, losing, 1-0, against Bournemouth on Saturday.

David Moyes’ side knew a positive result could see them outlast relegation for at least another day, but ultimately fell at the end. Joshua King’s 88th-minute winner for Eddie Howe’s side sunk the Black Cats for good, despite Sunderland having five efforts on goal.

The Black Cats become the first side relegated to the Championship so far this season while Bournemouth jump up to 10th place with their win.

Meanwhile,  Bayern Munich rolled past hosts Wolfsburg 6-0 at the Volkswagen Arena to claim their fifth-straight Bundesliga crown. Daniel Alaba’s 19th-minute free-kick opened the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti’s side before Robert Lewandowki added a nine-minute brace later in the half. Arjen Robben’s long-range strike added to Bayern’s lead before Thomas Muller made it 5-0 in the 80th-minute. Joshua Kimmich capped the final score at 6-0 five minutes later from a difficult angle. Wolfsburg now sits a point clear of the relegation zone.

In Italy, league leaders Juventus were held to a 2-2 draw at Atalanta on Friday. Ligue 1 leaders Monaco, meanwhile, fought back in a home win over Toulouse while Lyon defeated Angers.
