Americans Abroad Thursday Rewind: Arriola, Horvath and more

Club Tijuana may have finished atop the regular season table, but the club will now have major work to do to dig themselves out of a semifinal hole.

In Thursday’s Liguilla semifinal first leg, Tijuana fell, 2-0, to Tigres in the opening leg. Failing to score any away goals, Paul Arriola and co. conceded two goals just before halftime, as Lucas Zelarayan and Javier Aquino scored in the 42nd and 45th minutes, respectively, to give Tigres a major advantage heading towards the second leg.

Ethan Horvath and Club Brugge also came up short on Thursday, falling 2-1 to KV Oostende in the goalkeeper’s first loss since assuming the starting role. Even with the loss, a win against Gent on Sunday will lift the club to the Champions League.

Here’s a closer look at Thursday’s Americans Abroad:

Paul Arriola started and played 90 minutes in Club Tijuana’s 2-0 loss to Tigres.

Joe Corona dressed but did not play for Club Tijuana.

Michael Orozco did not dress for Club Tijuana.

Jose Torres did not dress for Tigres.

Ethan Horvath started and played 90 minutes in Club Brugge’s 2-1 loss to KV Oostende.

Mix Diskerud and IFK Goteberg’s match against AIK was postponed.

Cameron Carter-Vickers did not dress in Tottenham’s 6-1 win over Leicester City. (Carter-Vickers is at the U-20 World Cup)

  1. When Horvath joined Brugge, I think they said the plan was for him to sit the first half season, as the incumbent keeper is leaving at the end of the season.

  2. It’s good to see Horvath play and it was only a matter of time before he started to play. A Belgium club isn’t going to spend a million Euros on a keeper they expect will always be the backup.
