Dom Dwyer just recently became eligible to represent the U.S. on the international level, and it didn’t take long for Bruce Arena to reveal his plans for the Sporting KC forward.
Speaking at a press conference in Orlando, the U.S. Men’s National Team coach says he’d like to bring Dwyer in by the end of the summer. The U.S. is currently in the midst of World Cup qualifying, but have several friendlies and the Gold Cup scheduled for the summer period.
“Dom’s a very good player,” Arena said. “He’s just become eligible to play for the U.S. team, and he’s certainly a player that’s on our radar. I’m hopeful that between now and the end of the summer we’ll have an opportunity to have him play for the U.S.”
The 26-year-old English-born forward has scored 57 career MLS goals with five of them coming in 2017. Dwyer recently became eligible to represent the U.S. on the international level and he’s long stated his interest in featuring for the national team.
The forward will face competition, though. Arena stated his pleasure with Jozy Altidore’s recent surge of good form in Toronto while also discussing several other forward that remain on the radar.
“(Jozy) is in very good form and he’s scored a number of goals as of late for Toronto,” Arena said. “We saw him earlier in the year in January when he was dealing with a couple of injuries and he slowly built into the season. Then, in the games in March against Honduras and Panama, he showed pretty well. However, after that he has just gotten better and better
“We’re excited to see Jozy in a couple of weeks. I think some of the other players he played with in March, such as Clint Dempsey and Christian Pulisic, are in very good form as well. We’re also looking forward to getting Bobby Wood and Jordan Morris back. That’s a position of strength for the U.S. team.”
