MLS Ticker: Quakes hire former Arsenal executive, French forward trialing with Red Bulls and more

For the first time since 2010, the San Jose Earthquakes will have a new president.

According to a report from San Jose Mercury former Arsenal and Aston Villa executive Tom Fox will be introduced Tuesday as the club’s new president following Dave Kaval’s departure.

Kaval, who will remain on the team’s board, reportedly interviewed six other potential candidates before selecting Fox. Kaval was an influential figure on the construction of Avaya Stadium during his seven-year stint with the Quakes and will now solely focus as his role as Oakland A’s president.

Fox’s addition to the Quakes comes after a pair of front office additions in the past months, including general manger Jesse Fiornanelli.

The American executive most recently served as Aston Villa’s chief executive from 2014 until 2016. In addition, Fox was Arsenal’s chief commercial officer from 2009 until 2014.

“Everybody believes there is still growth for San Jose,” Fox said told the San Jose Mercury . “The charge is to find ways to continue to put San Jose in a competitive place. To do that by finding good players locally and finding good players in the U.S. and abroad and to grow our commercials.”

Fox’s arrival comes a month before the club’s projected busy summer gets underway.

SPORTING KC SIGNS DEFENDER AMER DIDIC

On Wednesday, Sporting KC announced the signing of Canadian defender Amer Didic.

The 22-year-old defender joins SKC from affiliate USL club Swope Park Rangers for the remainder of the 2017 season with options for 2018, 2019, and 2020.

“I am very excited for this opportunity,” Didic said in a statement. “This is something I have been striving to do for the last year and a half, but it doesn’t stop here. I want to take what I’ve learned from the Swope Park Rangers and help Sporting Kansas City stay successful and contend for championships. I feel prepared to step in and do what I need to do for the team to win.”

Didic made 32 appearances for Swope Park in his first professional season last year, collecting USL All-League First Team honors as well as being named a Defender of the Year finalist. In addition, Didic has made a pair of appearances with Canada’s U-23 national team winning a U-23 tournament in Qatar months prior.

“Signing Amer is something we have been planning since the beginning of the year when he joined us for preseason,” Manager Peter Vermes said in a club-released statement. “He is someone who came to the Swope Park Rangers last year and has made an incredible evolution in a short period of time. He’s a very good defender with the ball at his feet and he’s incredibly agile for his size. I’m excited for Amer because not many people knew about him out of college, and I appreciate when players get rewarded for staying committed and going after their dream.”

ALEXY BOSETTI ON TRIAL WITH NEW YORK RED BULLS

The New York Red Bulls’ 15 goals this season are not jaw-dropping nor discouraging, albeit acquiring an attacking piece to complement Bradley Wright-Phillips would not hurt.

The possible reinforcement? OGC Nice and former France U-19, U-20 striker Alexy Bosseti, who has been training with the Red Bulls for a number of days. Bosetti won the 2013 U-20 World Cup with France, and is set to leave childhood club Nice this summer.
