Report: Miami Beckham United ready to move forward with Overtown site

Since the proposed Miami MLS expansion team led by David Beckham announced the addition of Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, the cogs have started to turn for the long-stalled franchise.

After the addition of Boehly, the team finally closed its search for investors and is reportedly in good shape financially, reports the Miami Herald. The next step for the fledgling franchise would be completing the $10 million acquisition of stadium land in the Overtown district, a task heavily backed by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

“We’re ready to go. We’re waiting for the league to award the franchise,” said Gimenez. “We can get our part of the deal done within 30 days.”

The positive message from the Mayor and stabilization of the group’s financial situation bodes well for MLS’ 24th expansion franchise. With Los Angeles FC set to begin play in 2018, the door remains open for a 2019 Miami launch to even out the league’s odd-number situation.
