The U.S. Open Cup began this week with teams from the lower divisions fighting for a chance to become giant killers in the second round.

PDL side South Florida Surf won the only game on Tuesday by a 4-2 scored over Red Force from Florida. The majority of Wednesday’s clashes featured clashes from the teams in the same state or region.

Six of the contests went to penalty kicks and a seventh went into extra time. Two of the biggest winners were the Atlanta Silverbacks of the NPSL and Fresno Fuego, as both teams notched 4-1 victories.

One match still has to be played, as Wednesday’s clash between Chicago FC United and Grand Rapids FC was postponed due to inclement weather. The winners from the first round will play next Wednesday in the second round, where clubs from the USL enter the competition.
