Yedlin, Newcastle top Barnsley to win Championship title

DeAndre Yedlin’s first season with Newcastle ended with a return to the Premier League and a title in hand.

Newcastle defeated Barnsley, 3-0, on Sunday to claim this season’s Championship title. The club had already sealed a return to the Premier League and Sunday’s win saw the club finish top of the table, edging Brighton & Hove Albion by one point.

“We didn’t know what would happen with Brighton at Villa,” Yedlin said, according to the Newcastle Chronicle. “But fortunately we got a good result here and there was a good result for Aston Villa. We got what we deserved.”

Newcastle opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Ayoze Perez as Yedlin provided the assist before Chancel Mbemba added the team’s second in the 59th minute. A 90th minute finish from Dwight Gayle all but locked up the title as Brighton drew Aston Villa, 1-1, in their final match.

Yedlin played all 90 minutes in the win in what was his 27th league appearance of the season.

  1. DeAndre Yedlin was never going to displace Kyle Walker at Tottenham. On loan at Sunderland, he began to show promise. According to the local press, he had an impressive work rate and was very coachable. Other EPL teams showed interest. And then he did the unthinkable by signing with relegated Newcastle, Sunderland’s bitter local rival. That provoked a negative reaction from Klinsy at the USMNT, caused resentment from Sunderland supporters and suspicion from Newcastle supporters who previously regarded him as an enemy. Yedlin had his work to do, but Rafa Benitez valued him. Over the course of the season, he became one of Newcastle’s most consistently reliable players when healthy. The media even began praising his work rate and commitment. According to a BBC report on Newcastle’s last game, “At St James’ Park, DeAndre Yedlin terrorized Barnsley down the right-hand side and it was his cross which Perez guided into the bottom corner to open the scoring.” As a Newcastle fan, it’s been a perfect storm: Benitez coaching Yedlin will benefit the USMNT as well as Newcastle.

  3. What an exciting feeling as a player that must be to secure promotion and win the league.

…and here we are having fellow fans trying to convince themselves, and others, that a few week tournament, MLS Cup, and no Promotion/Relegation is “exciting”.
