The women’s soccer community lost a giant on Tuesday morning, as it was announced that former U.S. Women’s National Team manager Tony DiCicco passed away at the age of 68.
The news was delivered to the world by his son, Anthony, through his Twitter account.

DiCicco took over as USWNT boss in 1994, and, during his five years in charge, the USWNT won 103 matches and the famous 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final over China in penalty kicks.
After coaching the USWNT, DiCicco served as commissioner of the Women’s United Soccer Association and was a vital figure in promoting the women’s game. He also served as a broadcaster for Fox Sports and ESPN.
Anyone know how did he pass, I have been looking all over the web and cannot find anything. I assume they have not released the details. My condolences to the family, he was a great coach!
RIP Coach D. I had a brief meeting with him in an elevator at the NSCAA coaching convention in the early 2000s in KC. Myself and 2 young coaching friends had been painting the town red, and it was obvious that we were in a “different” state of mind than Tony. I shook his hand and my unaware buddies gave me stick for sucking up to him. I was like, “the dude has won the World Cup”, and my friends both shut up. He kind of smiled and laughed and asked us if we were having fun at the convention, and that was it. Thanks for helping put US Soccer on the map Tony.
