Report: Danny Williams set for EPL move to Huddersfield Town

With U.S. Men’s National Team fullback DeAndre Yedlin set to rejoin the Premier League with Newcastle United, another American Abroad is reportedly set to join him with a second newly promoted team.

USMNT midfielder Danny Williams is reportedly set to join Premier League newcomers Huddersfield Town on a free transfer, according to the Daily Star. Williams has spent the past four seasons with Reading in the Championship as a key part of a midfield that made its own run towards promotion this season before losing to Huddersfield Town in the playoffs.

Williams has been a constant for Reading, starting 135 matches in four seasons while recording 13 goals, and has earned himself some international time with the U.S., making three appearances in 2016 and six in 2015. He joins a Huddersfield Town that will make its first ever Premier League appearance next season after winning the promotion playoff over Williams’ former team on penalties.

Aside from joining Yedlin in the top flight, he’ll also be joining the fellow German-American head coach of Huddersfield Town, David Wagner. Wagner, who guided Huddersfield Town to their unlikely promotion, has already made several splashes in the transfer market, most notably retaining the services of former Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy.

While it remains to be seen how Williams’ skills will translate to the increased competition of the Premier League, it will certainly make next year’s edition much more interesting for American fans.

  1. I was very impressed in the few games I saw him play in this year for Reading. He was one of the most tenacious midfielders in the Championship this year. He broke up Fulham’s fluid passing game during promotion. I’m looking forward to seeing him in the EPL this year.

  2. Why does he not play more for USMNT? He’s been great in Championship, as has Ream. But Williams in particular could be a good holding option behind Acosta/Bradley/Rowe, etc. At Huddersfield he will get exposed to a top coach (Staam was too) with links to the US, so lets hope for the best and lots of minutes.

    • he’s not really a holding mid, although i know he’s played there on occasion. more of a box-to-box type runner, like bradley.

  3. Happy for Danny. He played out his contract and due to his performances he’s been rewarded by getting an offer from a club promoted to the EPL. He’s not a high priced talent, but he can be a very versatile & useful player for a team on a tight budget. Even if Huddersfield doesn’t stay up he’ll have an opportunity to showcase himself to a number of teams.

  4. Great move for him. There are not many USMNT players currently in EPL. Williams has to be called into the team at some point. It’s illogical why he has not been included.

  5. Wow folks, we should have seen the Reading on the wall with this one. Not only has Kevin Durant ruined the NBA, but he’s now infected European football with his “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” approach. Not to bring in Durant’s seex life, but this move by Danny is such a fart in Reading’s figurative face. Hate to break it to Danny boy, but life requires hard work, and rent is due every day, so if he thinks this free transfer if going to pay off in the long term, then the pipes, the pipes are gonna come calling and drop an eviction notice on the front porch of his career.

  6. If u want Wagner to succeed and stay in the epl I don’t think bringing in Americans just to bring in Americans is the best idea. I like gooch but he barely got playing time for a terrible sunderland team and needs first team mins so he should stay down and for ccv and miazga a loan probably isn’t out of the question. Wagner doesn’t have any connections to these players, only American he has been around I believe is Joe gyau and doubt he gets a look cuz he is at a 3 bundesliga team and I’m not sure how good he looked there with 1 goal but did start a lot of games after he settled in.

    • Junior Flores, but he’s hardly ever played for Dortmund II. Seems kind of silly just because he played for the US that he would want to bring in a bunch of American players, its not like Viera has brought in a bunch of French players for NYCFC.

  7. Last year was awful for Yanks in the Prem (except a few early games by Gooch). So this year we have – Yedlin, Cameron, Hyndman, Williams/Wagner… anyone else I’m missing? Low chances of CCV, Miazga, and Olosunde making a few appearances. I think Djair Parfitt-Williams at West Ham could make a bench appearance or two.

Look, I know no one comes to this site for Pulitzer-level writing, but come on, let’s put some effort into this. Break out the thesaurus once in a while.

    • Not to mention Huddersfield are a tiny club and this was a free transfer. Not going to get much more bang for your buck than a guy like Williams for free.

  9. Perfect outcome to the Reading-Huddlesfield playoff! Both Yanks end up in the Prem.
Wondering if Wagner will bring more Americans in (but who is ready to do so?)

    • I can think of 2 possible Americans for Wagner–loan or purchase of Miazga and getting Gooch from the relegated Sunderland. I thought Gooch looked good at the beginning of last season, but after his injury he hardly ever even suited up

      • I don’t know of Miazga is up for the EPL yet. He certainly didn’t look so in his handful of appearances with Chelsea.

  10. Let’s make sure, regardless of his form during the upcoming season, never to mention him as a possible improvement or replacement for MB. Bradley is our captain, and CANNOT be questioned!

    • Agreed we should never question Michael Bradley. It seems like too many journalists have a personal connection to the Bradley family and don’t like to criticize. Bob was Michael’s coach at Metrostars and USMNT. Bob Bradley was Arena’s assistant for a long time. Jesse Marsch just said Michael Bradley should be in discussion for best US player of all time. Marsch played under Bob Bradley and remains friends. Marsch visited Bob in Egypt. Jeff Bradley forged relationships with members of the soccer media. So did Bob.
