Danny Williams signs two-year deal with Huddersfield Town

Another American will be featuring in the English Premier League this upcoming season.

Danny Williams has sealed a move to play in the EPL after signing a two-year deal with newly-promoted Huddersfield Town on Tuesday, according to the Terrier’s official website.

Williams’ move to Huddersfield comes after the German-American midfielder’s contract with Championship side Reading FC ran out; arriving to John Smith’s Stadium on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old joins a Huddersfield Town side led by German-American manager David Wagner, who sees Williams as the perfect fit for the club. Huddersfield Town is preparing for its first season in the Premier League.

“As our fans will have seen during the Play-Off Final, Danny brings a lot of quality to any team he plays for. His way of playing – his aggressiveness, tenacity and athleticism – fits our ‘Terriers Identity’ perfectly,” Wagner said. “It is not usual that a player of Danny’s ability is available on a free transfer, so there was understandably a lot of interest from clubs.

“When we spoke, it was clear that he wants to prove himself at the highest level in England and that he had a real desire to come and play for Huddersfield Town,” Wagner added. “He is a terrific character and will totally fit in with our group.”

Williams is the latest American to pen a Premier League contract, joining Stoke City’s Geoff Cameron, Newcastle United’s DeAndre Yedlin, and Bournemouth’s Emerson Hyndman.

  1. There have been like 20 players better than Michael Bradley in the last 10 years. The only thing that matters is who’s coaching. Williams has been better than Bradley the last 4.5 years. Even if Williams was the best defensive midfield in the Premier League, he’d have a hard time displacing Bradley. The decision to play Bradley has never been based on skill or leadership. It’s just based on relationships and who he knows.

    • I couldn’t disagree with you more. This has nothing to do with daddy, these are professionals not high schoolers. Lets see that list of 20… heck make it 10. No doubt Bradley has been up and down but there is a reason he is always on the field. A big part of his most recent issues were that JK was determined to make him a creator high up the field. We all know that isn’t where he is comfortable.

  2. Good for Danny Williams. It would be great to see someone break through and make Michael Bradley’s job insecure or even put him on the bench. Don’t know if DW is the guy but somebody needs to start pushing.

    • He’d have to displace Bradley. He’s not competing for the more connective CM, if we’re playing a 4-2-3-1 or a prototypical 4-4-2, then Acosta is likely to be tapped.

I’m looking at this purely as competition between McCarty and Willams for understudy to Bradley. He’d either have to be the best damn DM in the premier league, or Bradley would have to be injured.

If his goal was to make it on the plane, this is his best shot.

    • Yea definitely, it doesn’t matter at all how he plays in the premier league, just the fact that he’s signed a contract should automatically make him a starter on the usmnt. I think the better question is now in theory is williams the best American soccer player of all time???

      • Dan: although we all know you’re being sarcastic, I’m not sure you’re aware that Trey was being sarcastic as well…

      • Not saying that I agree, just posing that argument. Assuming he starts, you could say that he is playing better competition, at a higher level than either Acosta or any CM.

  3. This is the example of a great move in a World Cup year.

By the end of next season, the USMNT should be heading into Russia with a solid squad, but there’s still room for a dynamic DM. McCarty played very well against Ghana, but McCarty doesn’t play for an EPL team. Well played, Williams.

  4. This is some good July 4th news! Yeah they’ll be in relegation battle all season, but he will get a chance to prove himself in the EPL. I see little downside
