Several weeks after suffering a frightening injury, Ike Opara is back on the field.
According to the Kansas City Star, Opara participated in team drills on Tuesday for the first time since suffering a concussion in U.S. Open Cup action on July 11. Opara suffered the injury while defending FC Dallas defender Maxi Urruti, who kicked the Sporting KC defender in the head while attempting a bicycle kick. Opara was taken to the hospital following the incident and was released one day later.
The veteran defender is a leading candidate for MLS Defender of the Year as he’s helped lead Sporting KC towards the top of the Supporters’ Shield race. Opara has started 18 games this season, a career high, while contributing two goals and helping preserve a total of nine clean sheets.
