Sigi Schmid begins Galaxy tenure with draw against Sounders

There was a different vibe in Los Angeles on Saturday night as all eyes were on Sigi Schmid as he made his return to the league’s sidelines.

The two-time MLS Cup champion started his tenure in neutral fashion, commanding his Galaxy side to a 0-0 draw against a familiar and visiting Seattle Sounders at StubHub Center.

Clint Dempsey wanted to spoil his former boss’ night in brilliant fashion during the 43rd minute. The historic forward almost added another world-class goal to his résumé, but a lack of placement in his bicycle kick made it a routine save for Brian Rowe.

Giovani Dos Santos had one chance all night and he failed to make the best of it. In the 88th minute, the Mexican’s first-time volley came inches from stealing the home side all three points.

In the 72nd minute, Emmanuel Boateng delivered a bit of magic in the heart of the field. Twirling around Gustav Svensson and pushing the attack, but his precise pass to Gyasi Zardes was blasted to the side of the net. The U.S. Men’s National Team forward had another chance to capitalize in less than 10 minutes prior. Following a whipping cross by Dos Santos, Zardes’ header seemed to curl to Frei’s far post, but instead ended in the hands of the Sounders’ keeper.

The Galaxy shift their focus to next Sunday’s match against Portand Timbers which can possibly be Jonathan Dos Santos’ debut, while the Sounders continue to search for vital points in Minnesota.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Christian Roldan continued his hot form, boosting the midfielder for the visiting Sounders and minimizing Giovani Dos Santos effectively.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Clint Dempsey could have had  hands-down the goal of the week, but his bicycle kick failed to have much placement.

MATCH TO FORGET

The Galaxy will have nightmares of their captain’s lack of concentration. Jelle Van Damme’s careless fouls, earning him two yellow cards, will now cost him the following two games against Portland Timbers and New York City FC.

  1. Are they penalizing red cards for two games now? Or, are they just tacking on another game to save Disco the trouble? Or did I miss something like an accumulation of red cards?
