Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: DeAndre Yedlin, Christian Pulisic and more

Following a busy midweek period, the weekend brings several intriguing matches for the contingent of Americans Abroad.

Christian Pulisic is fresh off a disappointing Champions League defeat against Tottenham, but the Borussia Dortmund winger has a chance to help his team bounce back against FC Koln on Sunday. It’s not the only intriguing Bundesliga match on the schedule, as Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach face RB Leipzig while Bobby Wood leads Hamburg against Hannover.

In England, DeAndre Yedlin could make his season debut for Newcastle after returning to the bench last week. Yedlin has been dealing with an injury to start the campaign, and his return could be a boost as Newcastle takes on a Stoke City team without Geoff Cameron.

Elsewhere, Omar Gonzalez and Cameron Carter-Vickers look to build on midweek goals while Jonathan Gonzalez and Julian Green headline a list of younger players looking to build on solid performances last time out.

  1. For all those people saying that Arena should have called in all the European players for the GC, notice Lichaj who missed his club’s preseason and has played all of 13 minutes in 8 matches for Forest this season. He has played both League Cup matches but considering they face Chelsea on Wed. I don’t see that run going much further.

williams looked pretty good. took a minute to get up to speed, but he was one of the best players in the 2nd half.

he also played further back than he used to for reading, definitely a d-mid. not sure if that’s just because of who he replaced in the 11 (i’m not real familiar with huddersfield), or if that’s where wagner will always want him, but it’s something to watch.

  2. Andy Novakovich on loan from Reading scored his second goal for Telstar in the Dutch second divison today, that’s 2 goals through 5 five games and 2 in a row

  3. Wood not in line up due to a knee injury. Not sure when that occurred but with the injuries to Cameron, Morris, Yedlin, Brooks and possibly Woods, Arena is going to have some tough decisions to make.

  4. As much as I want to see him play, I really hope Dortmund give Pulisic a break this weekend. At least use him as a sub. He’s put a lot of miles on his legs and body in the last few weeks.

    • Yes, I was surprised to see him go the full-time last weekend and in the CL. Tuchel would have definitely rested him, but I’m not sure with injuries that the bench is as deep this season.
