Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: DeAndre Yedlin, Jonathan Gonzalez, Danny Williams and more

DeAndre Yedlin made his return to the field over the weekend, and it was certainly a successful one.

Yedlin’s return was good news for the U.S. Men’s National Team heading into the final round of World Cup qualifiers, but it was also good news for Newcastle in a 2-1 win over Stoke City. The USMNT fullback featured for the first time since picking up a hamstring injury in preseason, one that kept him out of the first few matches of Premier League play and September World Cup qualifiers.

Danny Williams also made his mark in Premier League play, starting and playing a full 90 as Huddersfield Town tied Leicester City. In the Championship, Tim Ream was the lone American to go a full 90, but he did so in a Fulham loss to Burton Albion.

Elsewhere, Jonathan Gonzalez led Monterrey to yet another win, Julian Green featured again for his new club and Ethan Horvath earned a clean sheet in a Club Brugge win.

  1. Positives from this past weekend:
Yedlin going 90 – Please no more Zusi at RB.
Chandler going 90 – No more Zusi at RB
Williams going 90 – Has to be considered an upgrade over McCarty, and needs to be called.
Miazga going 90 – With Cameron sidelined, have to think this helps his chances.
Green going 90 – We need winger options, have to think he’s helping his case.
Jon Gonzalez going 90 – has to be close to a call-up…maybe over Acosta?
Horvath – At this point give him the call over Rimando for 3rd keeper.

    Negatives:
    Wood sidelined due to injury.
    Cameron sidelined due to injury
    Brooks sidelined due to injury.
    Fabian DND….Any word about why?

    • Williams should be strongly considered for a starting place, but I’d be stunned if Bruce upended more regulars with 2 games left in qualifying.
Miazga, and Gonzalez could definitely be in the squad, but no way they start vs. Panama over Gonzo and Acosta.
Julian Green is pretty far down the depth chart I think right now. He will need to play more cosistently and start producing goals/assists before getting back involved. Arriola is keeping him out at the moment.

    • i agree with the need to call up everyone except for Green. We can’t force Green to be better than he is right now, and right now he’s a decent Bundesliga 2. player, nothing more. He needs time to develop and to get some confidence back, and if we’re being hinest who is he realistically going to take minutes from at this point??

I also agree with @unmistakeable Ronaldinho that it’s doubtful Arena will call in any new faces with just 2 games left to qualify. I like most agree that new, younger faces need to be infused into the team sooner rather than later but i also understand that continuity is important when trying to manage a qualifying cycle thus the doubt that we’ll get any new players in. If/when we qualify, Arena will have to seriously consider revamping the team in spots, and he has been quoted as saying the WC is a young mans tourney so you have to think those changes will be on his mind if they haven’t already! The likes of D Williams, Johnny Gonzalez, Tyler Adams, Miazga, Chandler, and maybe even McKennie would get the first looks for me! No one else who hasn’t been called in yet are making enough strides with their clubs to be strongly considered at this point but that could change in a few months.

  3. Emmanuel Sabbi saw his first action going 18 minutes for Hobro in the Danish Superliga. Hobro is in 2nd place after nine matches. Sabbi moved on a free transfer from Las Palmas in Spain in August.

  4. Not sure if it was reported or if I missed it but Joshua Perez is now with Livorno of the Italian Serie C (no U23 league in Italy, I think there is talk of starting one for next season). He has made one appearance for 9 minutes, his loan was made on August 30, so hopefully just getting acclimated to the new club and will then see more time.

Klinsmann made his first start for Hertha II and loss 2-1 (for all you JK haters).

  5. Didn’t see the game but read where Julian Green was very active with a few shots and had one on target. Wish SBI would do a write up on Andy Novakovich from reading on loan at Telstar in Dutch second division, scored his second goal of season on Friday

  6. @joe dirt

watched the huddersfield game; pasting my comment (for what it’s worth) from yesterday:

williams looked pretty good. took a minute to get up to speed, but he was one of the best players in the 2nd half.

he also played further back than he used to for reading, definitely a d-mid. not sure if that’s just because of who he replaced in the 11 (i’m not real familiar with huddersfield), or if that’s where wagner will always want him, but it’s something to watch.

  7. Saw some of Danny Williams highlights and read the match thread at one of Huddersfields fan blogs to get their thoughts. According to their fans they thought he was really influential in how well Huddersfield seemed to boss the midfield against Leicester. Wins a lot of balls and distributes well playing a bit deeper role than the other midfielders such as Mooy. Williams had several long range shots in the second half go just wide too. Highlights show one superb sliding tackle that cleanly wins the ball and leads to a chance on goal for his teammates. Wish I could have seen the whole game, if someone else saw it hope they could add something.

My boy Julian Green with his second start and 90+ in a row for Guerth Furth. Kid just needs to play and the talent will shine. Would absolutely love it if he’d develop and we could use him in a 433 with him on the left.
