SBI Question of the Day: Which MLS team was the most disappointing in 2017?

Before the MLS playoffs begin on Wednesday night, we’re taking a look at some of the teams that didn’t make the playoffs, and more specifically failed to live up to expectations in 2017.

No team fell harder than FC Dallas, who won two teams after July 22 to finish out of the top six in the Western Conference after previously occupying first place.

Oscar Pareja’s squad won the Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup in 2016 and was expected to be in the mix for MLS Cup this season, but the club won’t even get a chance to play for hardware this postseason. A 5-1 win over the LA Galaxy on Decision Day was not enough for FC Dallas to get into the playoffs since it didn’t get help from elsewhere.

Speaking of the Galaxy, they fell face first on to the pavement in 2017 as nothing went right. Curt Onalfo was fired midseason and Sigi Schmid didn’t exactly get the best out of the group despite the signings of Jonathan dos Santos and Romain Alessandrini.

The Galaxy finished dead last in the Western Conference with 32 points and put together a miserable home record of 3-9-5.

Another one of MLS’ big spenders, Orlando City, put itself in prime position to make a leap into the postseason for the first time after the acquisition of Dom Dwyer.

However, the opposite happened and the Lions ended their season on Sunday with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Union.

Orlando hasn’t lived up to the expectations internally and from the fans over its three-year existence, and with Kaka leaving and Cyle Larin potentially out the door too, the club has a big offseason on its hands.

A year after reaching the Eastern Conference final, the Montreal Impact failed to create anything in the final two months of the season as they lost nine of their last 10 games.

Mauro Biello already paid the price for the team’s failure as he’s been removed from the manager position. Just like the three teams mentioned above, the Impact failed to thrive with a talented roster, theirs led by Ignacio Piatti and Blerim Dzemaili.

Who do you think had the most disappointing 2017? Let us know by casting your vote in the poll below and stating your reasoning in the comment section.

  1. The Revs. The lack of interest by the owner (Kraft) is letting the franchise sink. They should be forced to either develop the team or sell to somebody that cares

  2. MLS is such a broken league. Paying way over market value to a bunch of average players. Very few domestic players. Clubs not producing their own players at all and almost exclusively paying for average foreigners to make up the XI. Academies have been around for 10+ years and have a pathetic track record. #Sad.

  3. I’m going to say SJ. Sure they made the playoffs, but they did a lot to bolster their roster with players in their prime in lower level European leagues (Vako, Hyka, Hoessen, Urena, Affolter, Jungwirth) and youngsters like Thompson, Lima, and Yueill were supposed to break out. Despite this promise, the limped into the playoffs with the last little bit of stoppage time Goonie magic they could muster. And they were so up and down with no sense of anyone really grabbing a starting spot. Plus Dawkins was getting DP money to ride the pine, Alashe seems to have regressed, Pelosi never made it back, and there was still about 50% too much Cato for my tastes. Maybe they can go on a run with the knockout format and salvage the season but given their inconsistency all year I wouldn’t bet on it.

  4. I expected more from Orlando – I know LA is trendy here but placing faith in Giovanni Dos Santos was ill advised from the start. they just seemed poorly put together. Orlando – Kaka, Spector, Larin, Dwyer – should have done better

  5. As much as i would like to rub it in Dallas’ face how much they suck it really would be any team in the west that didn’t make the playoffs. The top teams in the west didn’t really run away with their spots. Everything including 1st place was up for grabs in the West.

    • You could say the entire West was not all that when 53 points wins it. Given almost all the top teams had injuries and play call ups to deal with

  6. Based on payroll and star power it has to be the La Galaxy. Not sure why they are holding onto Sigi, they need a manager who knows how to get the most of the players they brought in. Direct route one ball that Sigi likes does not suit the Dos Santos brothers style. Why waste the money on DPs like this if you bring in a coach who uses tactics opposite to the players strengths. I’m an Atl United fan so don’t really care, just fell a bit sorry for the La fans who love that team and watching it turn into a cluster fk.

    • It’s tougher with less than 1/2 a season. Sigi has already said that there is going to be a good deal of turnover and that next year’s roster will look very different.

That being said, LA did the least with the most.
