Gonzalez, Pachuca fall to Gremio in Club World Cup semifinal

Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca kept Gremio off the board for over 90 minutes on Tuesday, but it was what came after that doomed the Liga MX club to defeat in the Club World Cup semifinal clash.

Pachuca fell, 1-0, to the Copa Libertadores champions in Tuesday’s semifinal matchup thanks to a 95th-minute goal from forward Everton. The win sees Gremio lock up a match with the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal match between Real Madrid and Emirates league winner Al Jazira. Meanwhile, Pachuca will now take on the loser of that match in the consolation match.

Gonzalez started and played all 120 minutes in the defeat.

The Liga MX side, who entered the tournament as CONCACAF Champions League winners, defeated African champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, 1-0, in extra time on Saturday to book their semifinal spot. Gremio, meanwhile, played their first match on Tuesday as they entered the tournament in the semifinal portion.

Pachuca finished the match with 10 men as Victor Guzman was sent off in the 110th minute with a second yellow card.

  1. Omar had a glancing header on a corner kick that grazed the outside of the far post. 6 inches difference and it would have been the winning goal since it came during regulation. Defensively he was pretty good. Pachuca was frustrating to watch because they would create a fair number of chances in or around the 18 yard box, but then would be too slow to react and often not even get a shot off as a result.
