Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Jonathan Gonzalez, DeAndre Yedlin and more

While England gets caught up in FA Cup madness, the Liga MX Clausura kicks off over the weekend.

Following a slew of reports regarding his international future, Jonathan Gonzalez takes the field with Monterrey to open the season against Morelia. Gonzalez is fresh off a Copa MX crown as well as a Best XI selection as he looks to follow up a breakout campaign that saw Monterrey dominate most of the Apertura season. Elsewhere in Mexico, Joe Corona looks to earn his Club America debut while Jose Torres and reigning champions Tigres face Puebla.

In England, Premier League teams enter the FA Cup for what should be a busy weekend.  DeAndre Yedlin and Newcastle have a relatively straight-forward match with Luton Town to look forward to while Eric Lichaj’s Nottingham Forest faces the toughest match of the round against Arsenal.

Elsewhere, Shaq Moore and Levante are in for a tough test of their own in the form of Barcelona.

  1. Watching Jonathon Gonzalez play now. Looks like a pretty polished player for 18 years old.
We need to make sure we get him.

    • didn’t see it, but bournemouth’s commentators were describing it as a free kick that deflected off his head when he was in the wall. probably not a lot he could do about it.

      • Sounds like a really harsh own goal. If it was a free kick, and Emo was in the wall, the shot should have been on target so I’m not sure how his deflection makes it an own goal. Ah well. Anyone have an idea of how he played otherwise?

    • Wasn’t actually off him from what I saw. The player beside him in the wall got shoved in front of him and it went off him for a pretty fluky goal.

  2. My biggest hope for all these games is that Bournemouth uses this opportunity to play Hyndman. He really needs to get on the pitch. I would like to see him loaned out to a Championship side, ideally one with another American, during the January transfer window.
