Jordan Morris limps off injured in Sounders CCL defeat

Losing Thursday’s game was a big blow. Losing Jordan Morris was insult to injury.

The Seattle Sounders had to finish Thursday’s 2-1 road loss to Santa Tecla with 10 men after Morris was forced out of the CONCACAF Champions League game with what looked to be a serious injury. The 23-year-old forward suffered a knock late in the first leg of the Round of 16 series, and limped off the field in the 85th minute with the help of two athletic trainers.

Seattle had already used all three of its substitutions at that point and could not replace Morris, who did not put any pressure on his right leg while exiting the field.

The severity of the injury is not yet known, but Morris was surely hoping for a clean bill of health after being sidelined for several months by a hamstring problem in late 2017.

The Sounders will be crossing their fingers, as they could use him in the return legĀ against Santa Tecla on March 1. The MLS side will have to prevail at home in that match in order to have a shot at advancing after allowing an early lead to slip away on Thursday.

  1. I will say that if MLS wants any sort of credibility it needs – after 22 years of existence now – to be able to put away teams from El Salvador and Panama that no one outside of El Salvador and Panama have ever heard of.

Seriously, Garber: if Seattle, with all its resources, fan support, and money, can’t put away Santa Tecla by now, something is seriously amiss with our process. A Mexican squad would have put away Santa Tecla with their B-squads; they do it routinely at this stage of the competition.

We can’t do it with alleged stars and American Internationals like Morris out on the field?

Aim higher, MLS. It’s time the product started equaling the sum of its parts. I’m getting grumpy with this level of annual ineptitude.

      • Tigres tied Herediano, 2-2, on the road in Costa Rica. Two away goals? Hardly a dismal showing.

Elsewhere…America wiped out Saprissa, 5-1 – also in Costa Rica. Saprissa are the big dogs in Costa Rica. And Guadalajara beat Cibao 2-0, while Tijuana beat Motagua 1-0.

Meanwhile, the only MLS team that didn’t lose, actually, was the Red Bulls at Olimpia; they managed a 1-1 draw on the road…okay, I guess. Well, Toronto won, but only because they were also playing another MLS team in hapless Colorado.

Those are bad results, whatever face we put on them. MLS needs to start challenging Liga MX or people are seriously going to start wondering what kind of Mickey Mouse soccer the league is playing. The Sounders in particular should be ashamed.
